It is, yes. Same price as the Surface Pro keyboard is atm (has that dropped since release?). I was definitely expecting it to be cheaper and did laugh when I saw £110 'coming soon'. Why can't they ever get accessories released on time either? Anyway, I digress.

I mean it's not above and beyond and I would spend on a tablet in general but I guess it just stings a bit coming from the Nexus line.

I read what I think is an interesting point of view on reddit that suggested the Nexus 6 is as high spec and expensive as it is because it was in fact supposed to be an 'Android Silver' device:

Quote:
OK, so remember the old rumors? Google was killing off the Nexus program and replacing it with Android Silver, which would apparently be showcasing various phones running stock Android with a more aggressive marketing presence. Those rumors were busted when a Goggle employee confirmed Nexus was not dead. No word on Android Silver.

Yesterday, the Nexus 6 is revealed following several leaks and rumors. 6" Nexus phone by Motorola confirmed, and with a price tag of $649. The Nexus 6 will be aggressively marketed on ALL major carriers in the US, including US Cellular. Even Verizon, who famously **** all over the Galaxy Nexus, will be subsidizing the Nexus 6.

Contrast this with the "old" Nexus business model, which really began in earnest with the Nexus 4. High end hardware for a very affordable price. Available unlocked primarily through the Play Store, or via T-Mobile. Same deal with the Nexus 5. From where I'm standing, it sure does look like the Nexus 6 is, when it's all said and done, just another Android phone to choose from. It will be on the shelves of all the carrier stores and it is speced and priced to directly compete with other flagships like the Note 4 and G3. Priced as it is, corners may not have to be cut as they were (to a point) for the N4 and N5. However, the marketing and price largely defined the Nexus phones. Now we have a massive phone that outsizes Samsung's well-known phablet and doesn't cost much less.

In the end, it seems like the "traditional" Nexus user has been abandoned. The unique hardware + pricing combo that made a Nexus phone a Nexus phone is gone. The newest Nexus handset is simply another phablet to choose from among other similarly priced and speced phones. Stock Android and speedy updates aside, it seems like the Nexus 6 will resemble what we thought "Android Silver" would be, and just blend in with the rest.
I think it makes sense, but who knows what direction things will go in from now on.

I'd bet that the price of the 6 is high because Verizon demanded it as a stipulation for carrying it. Google wanted to tap the huge vz customer base and vz didn't want to undercut their other phones. Just a theory.

Surely Verizon could carry it and charge whatever they liked on contract regardless of how much it actually cost as a device?

I'm not dismissing your theory tho, it fits with the thinking Google had originally planned to market this phone across the board anyway and had to bend to someone (is Verizon's share that weighty? I always thought T Mobile had the biggest thing going but Verizon just covered some areas exclusively).

Edit: not forgetting Verizon have the exclusive (yeh?) Droid Turbo coming in a few weeks which IMO is a better phone, so do they really expect to sell more Nexus 6s?

N6 and n7 are very different devices. There is overlap but not an awful lot between a $650 large phone and a $200 small tablet.

If you buy one you probably won't buy the other but there are a lot of users of 5 inch phones who have bought a 7" tablet and would continue to, especially with a price drop in the mature product and a 6" phone is extremely niche.

IMO it's more valuable for android and thus Google to have a good small tablet on the market which isn't forked (fire 6 etc) than to have a niche huge nexus phone, which makes me think they have rethought the entire nexus device's purpose. It's not about getting nexus into the hands of people and is instead about setting design and spec standards for the market.

But then this is completely the opposite of the Android One devices, which is fine but is a little schizophrenic IMO. Not that it's unique when they sold the Pixel and Samsung "for everyone" Chromebooks side by side.

Is there something like "windows explorer" on the Kitkat operating system that is coming with my phone?

Never owned a cellphone much less a smartphone but a Moto G 2nd gen is on the way. I assume smartphones have hard drives just like my PC. I do most of my work through windows explorer where all my directories and files are listed. Is there something like "windows explorer" on the Kitkat operating system that is coming with my phone? I know I will be aggravated until I can clearly see everything that's on the hard drive.

thanks a lot

Yep, there are lots of file explorer apps available. I use this and would recommend it.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...fs.filemanager

To clarify - no, one won't come preinstalled on your OS. Also, as far as you are concerned there will be little reason to dig around in the system files etc, but without 'root' access (Google for more info) you won't be able to make any changes there anyway, you will just be able to browse through and move around your own stored files.

That looks perfect, thanks. The only reason I'm getting the phone is to take and read notes while at the poker table. I've certainly lost hundreds of dollars facing players because I couldn't remember my notes.

Are there any other basics you'd recommend? I've done some research on apps that make typing easier and more efficient. It's too bad the keyboards don't have numbers on them but with predictive typing I guess I wont have to type out words like thirty-five.

If you didn't actually want/need to make calls then I would gave gone for a table with a stylus but that's by the by.

Evernote is one of the go to apps for organised note taking.

I'm guessing that Google has people whose opinions they trust more than yours, and that they in fact spent quite a significant amount of time carefully considering the range of options they were offering the market.

Your history of knowing people with both a 5 and 7 inch device is really not interesting or important in a discussion of six inch devices.

Also, do you have some data that would make you believe there was a large enough profit margin on the n7 to consider a price cut that would matter to the market as a possibility for leaving it on sale? Last I heard, they were remarkably low margin devices.

I'm pretty sure you can turn on the numbers row by default on SwiftKey

Yeah it was obviously implied that Google had analysed it more then me, it just makes no sense to me and I've yet to read a good theory on the strategy.

It is important when the six inch phone will be extraordinarily niche.

They were low profit in the initial run but the fixed costs of development will be paid off by this point so the contribution per unit is now going to be close to the actual profit margin. Being low margin at launch doesn't men much twelve months later.

In terms of quality it is still one of the best tablets on the market especially in its segment a year after launch too. It's not bleeding edge but it is still a worthy buy that wasn't replaced by the N9 because the N9 is aimed at a different segment and even a different use case "makers" v consumption of the 7.

I assume a file explorer would come as standard on his moto g, no? I know I use a third party one but I don't recall having a phone that didn't have one included with it.

I would recommend this one BTW:

Just checked - the original one at least didn't, even with the bundled Moto apps. Perhaps they (Moto G etc) do now but stock doesn't come with a full blown file manager and never has to my memory.

These also looks nice:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...?id=nextapp.fx

For tablets having dual panes is useful.

To weigh in on the Nexus 7 thing a bit more, it was talked about back in summer that HTC had other tablets coming in their new line up. T1 aka Nexus 9, then two others - T7 and T12.

https://twitter.com/evleaks/status/491158405114253312

I don't think they were rumoured to be Play Edition or Nexus devices, but perhaps it played in somehow.

Zica, I have one of these and it might be a better cheaper option for what you need:

Asus Vivotab note 8

It's a full windows 8.1 pc, with full tablet function, and wacom digitizer and pen for $250. Pretty unbeatable at that price, and perfect for notes. Also comes with a student version of ms word for free. I love mine. If you're not heavily invested in android it's probably your best bet.

If you learn how to use onenote, it's perfect for you. Basically, you write with the stylus, and it turns it into text. No keyboard needed.

Edit: If you have big hands like me you'll need to spend $60 on a surface pro pen, the included one is too small to use. You'll also nees a micro sd card so you don't fill the internal drive.

I'm really looking forward to the new camera APIs in L. The ability to shoot RAW is great, and it would appear that even if Google don't get the camera right this time with Google Camera then third party options really will be able to.

Some example and comparison shots using a third party camera app in L:
http://imgur.com/a/qQkkR#0

This is all produced using a far from finished camera app too, and it may well come to be that someone builds in auto-processing for RAW images into a camera app (like JPEGs are processed now) without the need for post-processing on a PC.

tl;dr - Android L = (potential for) much better photos

runout_mick, thanks for the advice but I think if it is a phone it will be less obvious that I'm taking notes on it, I hope. Also, I admit, I do want the option of it being a phone as well.

I'm kind of hoping to replace my home PC and land line phone all together, to cancel my at-home internet access and land line phone and just use the wifi at the casino and a pay as you go, no contract cell phone service via Speakout Wireless for calls. Having the internet at home is super convenient but distracting too. I don't watch TV and if I can get rid of the internet at home maybe I'll put in more hours at the casino.

On an 8 inch device I would guess there would be a full on-screen keyboard and no need for a stylus.

What's the best Sportscenter/theScore-esque app for Kindle Fire? Neither seem to work for it.

Does anyone have experience turning in a soft bricked phone through a full protection warranty service (Verizon)?

My S3 basically won't charge anymore and the guy at the Verizon store said that's usually software (lol failed attempts at rooting) but I have the total protection stuff and they'll send me a new one for free... just want to make sure they're not gonna see that I screwed with the thing and charge me like crazy.

Pretty sure it isn't being recognized via USB... although I finally just got it to charge so I'm gonna let it run up to 100% and check again.

soft brick usually you detect it in download mode. so you better check in that case most likely you can unbrick it yourself

I'm not sure if soft brick is the right term-- it doesn't really charge, and I have to use the download menu --> cancel in order to boot it because whatever I tried to change didn't stick, but after that the functionality is 100% normal.

But I did just see a guide about using Odin to restore everything so if that works that'd be huge, thanks.
