I like what you did for your phone. Would you mind sharing how you did that?
I did it in a couple layers because I have some other tasks going on as well so you could actually do this in one less step, but here's what I did (you may not need all the 'WAIT' commands I have or you may need to change the times depending on your device. These exist to make sure certain things finish before 'SAY' commands begin otherwise you might not hear them):

1) Create task 'ReadText' which contains the following:

The variables %SMSRN and %SMSRB are built-in variables containing the sender name and body of the incoming text. The %VOICE variable is the text of whatever it hears you say during the 'Get Voice' command. More detailed explanation of this step is here: youtube

2) Create a profile 'SMS read'
The context is Event > Phone > Received Text
The associated task is the 'ReadText' task above.

3) Create a task 'Car Enter'
Tasker > Profile Status
Hit the search icon by Name and choose 'SMS read'
Set = On

4) Create a task 'Car Exit'
Tasker > Profile Status
Hit the search icon by Name and choose 'SMS read'
Set = Off

5) Create a profile 'Car'
Context is State > Net > BT Connected
Hit the search icon on either the name or address and it should show a list of all bluetooth devices you've previously paired. Choose your car.
Hit back and it will ask you to assign a task. 'Car Enter'

6) On the Profile screen, long-press the Car Enter task next to the green arrow and in the menu that pops up choose 'Add Exit Task'. Choose 'Car Exit.'

So we created the task that reads the text aloud with voice prompt. Then we create a profile where whenever a text is received it will do this task. But we can also turn this profile on/off. Then we created Car Enter and Car Exit which exist just to turn that reading profile on or off (in those enter/exit tasks you could add other stuff like adjusting volumes). Then we create a profile that detects when it's connected to the car's BT and runs the Enter task, and then when it disconnects it runs the Exit task.

Let me know if you have questions.

Thanks, I've been thru the first few tutorial videos and I understand the basics. I'll continue thru them as I see the link you provided is a later tutorial.

Thanks.

Anyone here have any experience with the Sony Z series? Thoughts? I'm particularly looking for feedback on the skin and system updates.

Turns out that the Z3/Z3C are now officially "coming soon" to the US market, and Verizon should at least get the Z3 (fyi, you can already import them from the UK for under $500 if you are on ATT/TMobile as the radio bands are compatible).

So now I'm now deciding between the Moto X and Sony Z3...

Moto X has pure Android, all the voice-powered stuff and active display, and I like the design and being able to customize it. However, the camera and battery are pretty mediocre. Good enough, probably, but not great.

Sony Z3 has a fantastic camera and battery, and I also like the design (thought I wish it had the green/cyan color that the Z3C has) so the lack of customization is fine. But it has Sony's skin, so it won't get updates as quickly and probably for as long.

I just don't want to deal with rooting/ROMing anymore if I don't have to. I did on my current phone, the Galaxy S3, and the tradeoffs (crappier reception, camera, and battery life, namely) are worth the quicker updates and lack of Touchwiz. But now I just want the phone to work and enjoy using the camera again. I don't want to buy the Sony phone and end up being frustrated with the skin or lack of updates again...

Is the Z3C coming to US too?

Sure wish the battery on the new X didn't appear to suck. Anyone getting it plz review.

How is the bloatware on the M8? Is it best bought unlocked from HTC?

Yes, both are coming. T-Mobile is confirmed to be getting the Z3 and most likely the Z3C, Verizon seems to be getting a special version of the Z3 (...sigh), anything else is unknown at this point. I'd suspect at the very least that the Z3/C can be used on any GSM carrier (T-Mobile/AT&T) even if it's not offered at the subsidized price by the carrier.

I cant remember where else I read this, but this is the second or third time I have seen basically the same thing being said in different ways:

Quote:
In line with the release of the Android L platform, Samsung has also been working with Google to release Android updates as early as possible. The Samsung Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 will be one of the first ones to receive the new Android firmware around this November or December according to Sam Mobile. According to the report, the latest Samsung information suggests that the company should be quick to adapt and rollout whatever Google will be putting out.
http://au.ibtimes.com/articles/56696...m#.VB8X1kpX-uY

Effectively this new method of rolling out L mostly happening behind the scenes should make the OTAs really fast for the major manufacturers.

FTR I would still bet on Motorola getting the first non-Nexus update, but Samsung rolling it out in a few weeks after the Nexus devices gets the update seems likely.

Having an issue with my note 2 and it seems to be a hardware issue, so not sure if I'm out of luck.

Recently, when trying to insert earphones into the jack, the phone doesn't seem to recognize that it's plugged in and would continue to play music through the speaker, I don't think it was ignoring it, don't think it could tell it was plugged in. It seems like the earphones seem a tiny bit loose as they don't seem to fit firmly in. Any way I could try cleaning or something?

I'm using soundabout to force sound to come through the earphones, but meh, I occasionally have to toggle it off since it won't let me use the earphone mic to talk on the phone.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I had the same problem on my Note 2, just happened randomly out of nowhere. I had bluetooth problems with that phone, too. I was so disappointed with that phone from a quality standpoint after having iPhones.

did you try other earplugs ?
if the problem is the same with other earplugs you most likely have to change the jack of your note 2 , it s not too complicated i think and cannot be too expensive

Oh yea I forgot to mention that, but I did try other earphones to no avail.

I'll probably consider moving up to a note 4 at this point, but I'll look into seeing how much it costs to fix this jack from a reselling point.

Thanks.

With everything in electronics and technology today, it's ridiculously laughable how cheap you can find some things if you just look around.

I was upgrading a few things about my whole PC setup recently and by just knowing that Walmart stocked up for the week a few hours previously, I wound up getting a $40 mouse and $28 headset/mic for $31 lol. If I would have scoured Ebay and Amazon I still would have only saved a few dollars more.

I had a friend who spent a few days looking high and low for the best deals on GPU's and he got a $500 Nvidia graphics processor for $185 from some guy who bought it and then didn't need it. Never opened, had arrived in the mail a week earlier.

I had this problem with my galaxy s3. I took it to a cell phone repair shop and they offered to fix it for $50.

I called verizon (I was 2 months from a new phone) to try to get an early renewal and they suggested I put insurance on my phone for $8 which will also extend the warranty, and they will send me a replacement. I got the replacement and took the insurance off the following month.

So I have an S5 phone and the note 10 tablet. I have a few complaints with the tablet right now that I'm hoping you guys can help me with:

1. Notification syncing. Basically every time I turn on my tablet, it shows me all the notifications that have come to my phone since the last time I used my tablet. Unbelievably annoying. I googled around for notification syncing, but everything I see seems to be about (often using pushbullet) syncing and retrieving notifications with a PC. Still the right solution, or something else...?

2. App uninstalls. There's a bunch of apps that I have uninstalled that keep coming back. This god damn NYTimes app, for example, will NOT go away. Makes me want to throw this thing out the window. There are others too, but no point in listing them all. Anyone else have this problem?

3. Battery. Doing a full power on/off is kind of annoying, but just turning the screen off results in pretty poor battery life, like a phone. I was hoping the tablet could be charged like once/week or something based on how I use it. There's no sleep mode either. What's the standard approach here, just suck it up with one of those two options (I'd probably just use screen on/off and charge it more often)?

It's an incredibly sexy device, and I love using it. Especially doing my maths with the stylus. Just feels great. But these are some pretty huge issues for me right now, so any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Notifications should sync already natively in Android. It was, I believe, pushed out last year via a play services update. I have zero clue why it isnt syncing them properly across both devices (admittedly I only have a phone and an e-ink tablet on Froyo or Gingerbread as my two Android devices so I have no first hand experience of this)

Disable the apps if you cant uninstall them, but that doesnt seem to be the problem. I am not certain why they keep coming back if you are installing them, but I remember similar happened when I got a small update to my S5 and a bunch of random junk my network installed came back with it so that is my best guess?

The solution I would use for battery life is to set up a Tasker script that turns off wifi when the screen is off for a set amount of time, like an hour. I am pretty sure that is going to be the big drain of it when you are not using it. There may be a more elegant/easy solution than using Tasker in the settings which does basically the same thing, I have no idea I havent played with a Samsung tablet in years.

What is the boot up time on the Note 10, 20-30 seconds? I would think about just turning the thing off rather than relying on stand by if youre not expecting to use it again for a while. It sounds like you dont use it constantly given your expected battery life and if you need an immediate internet search (like the only thing time sensitive I can imagine) you can just use your phone.

Got the Chrome update that released last night. Very cool. Looks and feels much better than the old one.

Why are we being flooded with updates and apps all of a sudden? It seems like the amount of content available to us has exploded in the last couple of months. I'm out of the loop so I'm curious.

I dont like Chrome, or most Google apps, and havent for a bunch of releases. The new omni box in the middle of the screen that slides up to the top when you tap on it drives me crazy and its much slower to load as it pulls up the latest doodle.

GMail is so bad I dont even use GMail through its Google made app, instead using Cloudmagic. That is a terrible indictment of that app.

Hangouts for SMS isnt as good as several third party apps like EvolveSMS.

Even the barebones nature of Google Now Launcher bugs me, how can a multi billion dollar company packed with the best programmers on the planet not put in features like the ability to resize the homescreen grid? There are people working on their own in basements putting out more feature packed launchers and GNL is a one trick pony (admittedly a really nice trick). If Nova worked out how to have Google Now be the leftmost screen in the same way or if the Now widget showed all the cards and not just the higher priority ones I would use that and never look back.
