RE toggles: it doesn't look great but you can achieve this on stock with Widgetsoid (in fact I'm sure it was a post by Phil that introduced me to the app).

I don't have the time lately to faff around with the Android L previews so I've not looked in to it properly, but hopefully something like this is standard now.

Looked at the Note 4 page on androidforums, seems to be a fair bit of concern about the amount of bloatware on the phone. Concerning, definitely.

Ah, thought it was an HTC One derivative, was searching HTC One Plus and getting a bunch of M8 links, thanks.

Man, that one looks sweet at first glance. And is $349 the full retail price?? Thinking it can't be, but don't see any "with contract" language. Or is that just the pre-screening invite price?

Argh not on Verizon though. My wife is dead-set on a iPhone 6 so won't be switching to TMobile. Anyone in Vegas that can give experience w/ AT&T coverage here?

OnePlus has made getting the One such a pain. They've gone through so many gimmick promotions and contests that the phone has lost some of its luster and hype for me.

Just list the damn phone for sale and let people buy it. They want to be cute with making people get invites or some other crap just to get it.

It's a fancy way of saying "we don't have enough supply." But yeah, same for me.

agreed, thats why i mentioned they r finally getting rid of the invite system in october as it was the biggest barrier to people buying the phone

u cant deny that it is an incredible value tho, hopefully they can keep it with the demand when the pre-orders start

I'd also suggest considering the Sony Xperia Z3 - it has an outstanding camera apparently, and all the other metrics seem very high-end to me.

there is not really a "best android phone" out at the moment. and there probably never will be one.
- high-end normal size: galaxy s5, htc m8, lg g3, sony z3 and the new moto x are all great phones. all have advantages and disadvantages, depending on your priorities (look, features, camera, haptic feel, water/splash proof, speaker/sound quality etc). also, availability of some phones is limited to some carriers (in the us).

- budget phones: nexus 5, oneplus one are both great phones and substantially cheaper than the listed phones above. the old moto x (2013 edition) is also a good choice for many people).

- budget budget phones: moto g and moto e are both really solid phones if you want to spend even less (sub200$ full retail price). for many people, this should be more than enough. also, motorola will have a very fast update to android L. afaik there are no real reviews out there yet for the new generation of the moto g, but it should be similar, but bigger than the old one). if you know what you're doing, there are many chinese knockoffs (or just chinese phones) etc available for great prices, but if you don't know a lot, i'd suggest to just ignore this option).

- phablets: afaik, the note 4 is by far the best candidate here. if you want a phablet and not really looking for anything special, just buy the note 4

- high end smaller sized phone: just want to mention the sony z3 compact. sony is (nearly) the only company that really makes high-end smaller sized phone (4.6" screen). the s5 mini and the m8 mini are more or less average phones that just steal some of the design features and the name of their big brother, but the z3 compact has all the great features included. availability is / will be quite limited in the US afaik, but anyway, for everyone that doesn't like 5"+ phones, have a look at the z3 compact.

- if you want a stock android experience, the nexus 5 is as close as possible (aka completely stock). all the motorola phones are very very close to stock, with some useful and nifty additions. furthermore, chances are very high that the next nexus phone will be presented at the end of october, but nothing really substantial on this front yet.

that should cover some of the most often asked questions.

The Z3 Compact was definitely a front runner for me, but I'd read a few reports of poor support from Sony for their mobile products. This recent update about the older Xperia lines makes me hesitant to go Sony now. These phones were released just about a year ago and now their dropping support for updates.

Since I'm an iPhone person right now, and one who doesn't really give a **** about latest and greatest features (I only upgraded to ios7 accidentally) I'm not sure if this is a big deal.

Lou - there's definitely pros and cons across the board but I feel like for 9/10 people the waterproof + fingerprint unlock of the S5 is probably better than marginal improvements in camera/speaker quality etc... S5 is certainly no slouch in those areas afaik.

Is megapixels really the best way to judge what phone has the better camera? Can't they human eye not tell the differences of anything over 10 anyways?

It's not about your eyes so much as the fact that no one is looking at a pic on a 10 MP screen so you're never seeing all the pixels. The MPs themselves only matter if you're zooming /cropping. That being said, many other factors come in to play for overall camera quality:

Color reproduction
Image stabilization (optical/digital/none)
Focus speed/quality

to name a few

In stock none of the toggles can be customised. That is a cyanogenmod addition.

Stock android has no toggles in the notification shade (ie the one on the left). Both let you go to the toggles/settings shade with a two finger swipe.

I agree stock looks better, though the current version is a bit better than those screenshots whatever version that is. I am expecting a big overhaul when we go to material design, which will just require an overhaul of the colour palette because its all circles already.
I have a moto G with stock android 4.4.4 and long pressing the wifi and location icon switches it on/off and the brightness icon brings up the brightness slider

Basic USB connections only charge at 500mA. If you get the right USB plug, though, it can charge much faster. Most USB charging plugs do ~1000mA (1A), but some can do up to 2.1A for the devices that support them (typically tablets).

So that's worth checking into. Did your car come with a USB port, or are you using a cigarette lighter adapter?

Youtube user Hollwoodfrodo has a bunch of 'Tasker 101' videos with a lot of cool stuff. Just found one on voice control. Now when my phone connects to my car bluetooth and I get a text, it will speak to me and tell me who the text is from, then ask if I want the body read and respond to a 'yes' command.

Amazon has a ton, just search "car charger" and choose one that is rated for a minimum of 1A per jack. There are also a lot that support charging at 2.1A which is useful for tablets and I think some phones are starting to support that now?

htc m8 seems to get the most consistently great reviews as a guy who's in the maret for a new adroid. having been in the shop to test them out the lg g3 feels the coolest in the hand. then i discovered the existence of the oneplus one which seems pretty great for being a lot cheaper than the other top end phones

in france the price difference between G3 and one plus is pretty slim .
400€ for G3 right now.

LG is dropping prices like crazy , last year the G2 was 50€ more expensive than nexus 5 aswell

Thanks, I'll take a look at those.

I like what you did for your phone. Would you mind sharing how you did that?
