They look pretty bad but Samsung is probably going to embrace material design heavily (they are already ahead of the curve) which will sort itself out shortly.
Well, I have a GS3 and used Touchwiz for about 1.5 years. The last 9 months or so I've been using Cyanogenmod 10/11. The reason I was asking is because I think stock Android has the toggles you're talking about, but I'm not sure.

I don't see how those aren't actual toggles just like the TW ones. This image has fewer of them enabled, but it's customizable and you can toggle airplane/bluetooth/wifi/location and such. Plus it just looks better.
The thing I'm not sure about is if stock Android allows you to get the top row of mini-toggles in the standard notification drawer like TW does (the left images), but I certainly have it in CM11. And you can still go right to the Quick Toggle drawer on stock Android by swiping down with two fingers instead of one (or with one finger from the right, but I think that was the old behavior?).
