I just use the free one called Screen Filter.

If the goal is dimming your screen to super dark levels then I'm not sure how I could be improved upon, but then again I haven't tried any of the paid options.

Screen filter is great and I'm pretty sure it integrates with Tasker.

The apps need to be sideloaded and are not available in the playstore. Your phone needs to be rooted and you need Xposed Framework installed.

The above guide is great but the video is actually easier to follow.

Anyone know what the two face icon in top left does? It toggles from faces looking at eachother to away from each other.

I see no difference. It only shows up in selfie mode and does not mirror flip the image. *shrug*

Lol the placement of that shutter button.

My assumption is it's dual camera and looking around I found a quote on a reddit which says it is dual camera too... But I would have assumed you had tried it and would have instantly realised?

It's possibly related to the face auto smoothing effect. Looking at the image I think the slider let's you make the effect heavier or lighter and the picture bottom right is the original?

Shutter button seems like a pretty good spot for the way I hold a phone.

Hmm, I can't even picture this in my head. When I take a photo I just hold it at the edge just in from the corners and my left thumb sits perfect on the volume to use it as the shutter (different phones put volume in different places but you get the idea).

the face thing does reverse the image. I didn't realize it because it doesn't reverse the image until it's saved. I only hit the button and expected an automatic mirror flip.

Bleh. I installed a Verizon update to the OS the other day (to KitKat 4.4.2) and now Greenify won't work in any way, form, or fashion. Installing the update took away my root access, but Greenify should still work minus the auto hibernation feature. Now if I attempt to use Greenify to hibernate an app, it just hangs. I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it to no avail. Anybody else having this problem?

If you were already rooted, why did you install the Verizon update? In either case, if the update broke your root it may just be a simple issue of re-flashing SuperSU. Get the apk from here and re-flash using CWM or TWRP:

If you have the Samsung Galaxy S4 or S5 and the update broke root, that requires a different method altogether. Let's hope that's not the case.

I was half asleep and accepted the OTA update thinking that I was just updating an app.

I managed to restore the root using basically the same procedure that you described. I followed this video below.

my current phone is broken, is it worth waiting for one of the big new phones to come out, or is there a good new phone on the market now?

Great choice! I set up the G2 for my parents and loved it. I've heard the G3 is even better and that screen is insane.

2 things

1. My GPS absolutely blows sometimes, doesn't know where I am within 20 miles and can't tell which direction I'm going. S3, any ideas? Maps is occasionally useless.

2. Getting this message on boot recently along the lines of VSAZASW HAS STOPPED (the name is clearly wrong but it's definitely some Verizon process. Anyone else getting this?

I may have found a reason to root, maybe someone knows more.

I subscribe to MLB.tv and NHL gamecentre. When the games are showing on local tv, I get blacked out on my phone. I used to be able to use a gps spoofing app to be from elsewhere, but now it appears those app don't work if the Allow Mock Locations settings is enabled.

My quick research shows rooting can get around this. Anyone have further information on this?

Just FYI - Once rooted you don't necessarily have to flash a custom ROM. You can install Xposed Framework and download a module called XPrivacy and that should allow you to spoof your IP in order to watch blacked out games.
