Re: 2014 Android thread

i got a galaxy tab 10 inch for Christmas and did the auto set up for email and it said that it linked fine but it only gives me very old emails from like 3 years ago that were deleted long ago. I guess they were archived somehow and now that is all I get and nothing new. It is a gmail account but it has a acu.edu address since it is run through where I went to college. Not sure if there is something unusual I should do because of that.

Different chargers are designed for different phones.

Re: 2014 Android thread

duke doing work, nice job.

I have a question: Have a new Galaxy s4 and still getting it "up and running". When loading an Xfinity App the other day so I can have better email access, before I hit install it listed all the App permissions that I would need to give to Comcast(just a sucky, sucky company that everyone rightfully hates) and the list scared the crap out of me to the point where I'm like f this I ain't letting these scumbags have all this access to my phone, text, wi-fi, gps, and everything else you name it.

So am I just being paranoid and these "permissions" are required for them to properly be used on my phone, or am I being rightfully concerned?

Thanks in advance

Glad there's a new thread. Just got a nexus 5 after having the s3 for a long time. Haven't rooted yet but plan on doing so this weekend. Only complaint I have so far is the speaker being on the bottom of the phone. After I root, planning on flashing a volume increase mod. I'm sure there's on out there.

Sent from my Nexus 5 using 2+2 Forums

I was thinking about pulling the trigger on the Verizon Edge promotion to get the Note III (and obviously keeping it for min 12mo) does anyone have experience with this promotion or something similar with AT&T or T-Mobile?

You guys think that when USB 3.1 comes out the next Android phones will switch to that? It's a completely new interface that's symmetrical and uses the same plug on both ends of the cable. Maximum convenience!

Oh, it's also twice as fast as USB 3.0

You're right to be paranoid if it's an unknown entity or a known bad company. There have been issues with apps accessing user contact lists to spam all of their contacts with text messages asking the recipients to download the app. And Facebook, for example, used to access contact information without asking and upload it to their servers, so now your friends' cell phone numbers are (privately) linked to their profile on Facebook even if they never put it up there.

In general, look through the app description and reviews on Google Play before installing. Oftentimes the developer will explain why they need those permissions, and those apps are almost always fine to use. If there are issues, often times users will post about them in the reviews.

As for the Xfinity app specifically, I can't help you there. I don't like them either, though.

Edit: to be clear, the vast majority of apps/permissions are fine. But if you're installing sketchier apps and such, be careful and look through the reviews.

Didnt see this until someone quoted it.

Unified Remote doesnt need an IR emitter and afaik doesnt even support them. It allows you to control computers via bluetooth or over wifi.

Are you using the GMail app for it, or just the Samsung 'email' app? The GMail app should be able to manage it even if it isnt a gmail.com address and I have no idea how it could not be syncing right if that is what you are using :/

I was wondering about this when I read about the new USB type C format plugs. Assuming the manufacturers can make some kind of small adaptor (which as I understand it, they should be able to do so) they will become the de-facto standard really rapidly.

I can see Samsung jumping onto it asap, which will pretty much force everyone else's hand. I can see the type C connector "its reversible yo" and "capable of twice as fast transfer speeds!" being some kind of marketing effort, even if the vast majority of people wont own anything that has a 3.1 port to transfer data to the phone that quickly, within its lifespan.

No, I was using the Samsung email app. I will try the Gmail one when I get home. Thanks.

I'm using it and love it. I've uploaded almost all of my music to the cloud and love having the ability to add a song to my library if I hear something randomly on TV or the radio. I have friends who use Spotify and honestly, other than the ability to upload your own stuff to Google Play (which I think is pretty huge) and the greater social media options of Spotify, they both appear pretty similar. Not sure you can go wrong with either. I got in at the early adopter rate of $7.99/month too, which is a little bonus.

It seems ridiculous to me to pay $10/mo for any music service given Pandora, storage capacity, and other websites. But I'm also ridic cheap and have pretty low needs, so... whatever.

Re: 2014 Android thread

I feel that Google is going to end up with a better service... but there's a growing network effect of people sharing Spotify playlists (also, crossfading settings are better on Spotify) and the easier ability to save dynamic/changing Spotify playlists to my mobile to ensure my music on my mobile is often fresh and new.

+1 on tasker fear, have a nexus 4 with tasker and pebble plus pebbletasker and I haven't really used it. Don't know where to start! Will take a look at the wikidot link but any and all suggestions for tasker gratefully received.

Plus the super for Pandora still not being non-US. I use it in my laptop with media hint and chrome but presume there's no phone method?

Best,
Pete

Pandora is fine, but I just like the ability to listen to specific songs when I want to listen to them, not just listen to a radio station. To each their own though. As a service I think Google Play All Access Music (or whatever dumb name they gave it) is pretty fantastic. Netflix for music, essentially.

Re: 2014 Android thread

Ok so I'm glad there are people here who use it. Confirm/deny:

1) The song/artist radio feature is awful (they seem to exclusively play weird/obscure deep cuts -- and I like weird/obscure deep cuts)
2) The genre stations are way worse than Pandora or even Songza
3) They're missing a ton of good music (Beatles? Zeppelin?)
4) Everything else is amazing

Granted I don't have music to upload so that feature is lost on me and I don't want to go through painstaking effort to create playlists when I very well might be canceling this after the free trial. Overall though, does a lot of what I want to do, but really lacks in a lot of ways. Re: the main radio feature, I get that you don't want to be Pandora and play the same 5 songs over and over, but can we give some weight to the most popular / hit songs?

Also, would love a feature where I can make a playlist and then radio based on that (as opposed to an artist or song), but as far as I can tell no such feature exists. Also seems tough to change around your radio station by injecting/removing/rearranging songs (a la old school party shuffle) which would be pretty awesome.

Right now for me it's basically on demand album playing with some stuff you couldn't find on YouTube or Grooveshark, but missing a lot of stuff as well. The radio is nice in that you can play whatever whenever and skip around in a song, unlimited skips, etc but seems really high maintenance and in two days I haven't been able to create a station that I can just let ride (and that's not me being ridiculously picky either).

Thoughts?

Re: 2014 Android thread

Combining stuff you have bought (or whatever) elsewhere like Beatles with the stuff on All Access is the expert play, fwiw.

I like its "similar artists" feature and the radio and playlists can be hit and miss I have discovered and rediscovered some stuff I wouldnt have thought to listen to otherwise.

RE Tasker, this post from the old thread is a very good, basic explanation.

1) I honestly don't know. I generally only listen to playlists I've set up on random or albums, very rarely any radio station.
2) See 1)
3) Yup, but as you alluded to, that's where the ability to upload your own stuff comes in.
4) Yup

I agree that as of right now there's no way to make a radio station based off of a playlist.

To add to dukemagic's response, if you have access to the latest Android (probably not since I don't think Samsung has released it yet) or are willing to root your phone then you can take care of this with Permission managers. You can go to each app and restrict each permission individually, barring the ones it should need for functionality.

Also like dukemagic said, you're right to be paranoid. I think it was 'Brightest Flashlight' that was caught collecting a ton of user info due to the permissions they had. Every time I open up fb my manager tells me that it's been blocked from accessing my phone contacts list, etc.
