the non-xl-pixel2 has crazy large bezels for a 5inch flagship phone imho. besides that, it's afaik a great choice.

Yeah agreed on bezels. Probably going with Pixel anyway - got one for $450 from someone I know. pretty tough to beat on value. My wife doesn't care either way.

Love the android picture-in-picture feature. Not sure when it rolled out, but I've only been using it for a week or so and it's great - currently watching a baseball game while writing this post

But will this still be true when the new note 9 is released in a few days

I was showing my "iPhone is better" brother in-law split screen with YouTube video running on top on both. Serious multi tasking. He's still not convinced bc why does he need that????

Brag: I did get one of my nephew's over to Android.

As an Android user I never use that feature, horrible selling point of the OS imo.

Anyone running Android 9 yet? Thoughts?
Just got the notification that it was available yesterday, but not sure if I want it to install right now

I have a first-generation Pixel XL and I am holding off due to the rapid charging bug affecting that particular phone.

Thanks, good to know.
That's the exact phone I have.

Rapid charging seems to be working on mine (well, at least the phone says it is fast charging).

Getting the usual occasional app crashes early in a new release.

The phone speaker on my LG G5 just crapped out and I'm out of warranty. Kind of hate the idea of buying a 2018 phone given how iterative upgrades have been for the past few years. Can anyone recommend a good value 1-2 year old phone I could pick up?

Android 9 works fine on my OG pixel. Pretty mild/uninteresting update except the new navigation gestures which has got to be the stupidest thing of all time. I reverted back to the normal buttons.

Oh one thing that I am a bit torn about though... The new navigation UI has 1 amazing feature. When you don't have auto rotate turned on (which I never do because I almost never want my screen to rotate) and you turn your screen, a little "rotate screen" button appears in the previously occupied square button spot, so you can still rotate your phone for videos and stuff. I think I'm still preferring the old UI (mostly because the new one is just slow and has input lag), but that button was sweet.

I'm probably not explaining that right, but curious to hear why everyone disagrees with me.

got it last week on my pixel 1, seems like a pretty unimportant update. i like the overall look, hate the clock on the wrong side. cant say ive noticed battery getting any better, i dont like the new volume feature too much. phone seems a little slow at times too now.

Pixel 1 here, similar thoughts to above. Frustrated that the volume buttons seem to only control media volume now - it now takes several taps to get to the menu to change ringer volume

+1 to hating the clock on the opposite side. wtf?

One of my favorite things about my previous phone (Droid Turbo) was that you could touch the screen anywhere to take a picture. You didn't have to tap a button - just touch the screen and SNAP, picture!
And if you wanted to change focus there was separate little icon that you can drag around the screen.
Made taking one handed pics super convenient, even while holding the the phone at any angle/orientation.

Anyone know of a good camera app that has this feature?

my pixel and my previous s6 both had options to use volume buttons to take pictures, pressing the screen still set the focus. also "ok google" can take pictures even if its in a stand (so no need for the timers they all have). pixel doesnt but s6 had the option to use voice commands (something like.... picture, cheese, smile, a few others, and itd take a pic on a 2-3s timer)

i dont do any editing at all so ive just always used the default camera apps

and since i cant edit, its annoying on some apps that force tilt (landscape?) you arent able to drag down notification bar to turn on flashlight or anything.

since pixel 3 looks pretty uneventful, guess this one will have another year of service

A phone OS powered by AI sounds even creepier than the usual stuff we put up with.

To someone who's a bit of a smartphone noob having first got an Android phone in 2015, can someone explain why you would go for an expensive android phone over a cheaper one?

My current one is Android 6.0, got it with a phone contract in late 2017 where I would have to pay something like 120 euros if I wanted to just take the phone without the contract. It's an Orange Dive 72 (rebadged Alcatel 3).

What am I missing out on?

I switched back to Pixel launcher because I found some slight performance degradation on Nova and wasn't really using any of the customization.

The required "at a glance" thing is absurdly stupid but o well.

Probably camera quality, software and security updates, and phone performance, in that order.
