A phone will almost never run out of RAM and 2gb is more than enough. This isnt like PCs where more RAM improves performance.

The reality is that 2gb is cheaper than 3gb and it isnt a feature anyone does (or should) care about so they keep to 2gb to keep profitability/unit high.

my N5's showed up today. Nice looking phone, just a tad bigger than my gnex, which i like. I really wanted to rock this without a case, but the camera lens on the back sticks out slightly? wtf is that? that pretty much requires a case now. Any N5 users have good recommendations?

No case for me.

I tired a couple of cases, the Spigen I recommended at some point is good, but I just go caseless now. The glass circle thing over the lens is no more fragile than the screen, I dont worry about it at all.

Does anyone own the galaxy gear? I am thinking the price should drop tremendously now with the gear 2 and gear fit coming out and i think i would be fine with the gear

I'm somewhat sure that nobody owns the gear. I don't mean in this thread, I mean in the world.

They really didnt. They gave away plenty on contracts for the Note 3, but the sales were abysmal especially once you factor in the massive return percentage.

What Launchers are you all using these days? Recently, I've tried Aviate, Everything.Me, Smart Launcher, Themer and the Google Experience.

I have no idea which I prefer though.

Im on Nova right now. I tend to cycle between Nova, Action and the built in KitKat Google Experience Launcher (using App Dialer on Nova and GEL, normal App Drawers are the worst). All have different features that I like over the others.

Themer I couldnt get along with, missed out too many features I like and tbh I prefer simple launchers so I am not in their niche. Aviate is a great idea, but I dont travel enough to get the most of its features and I find it just easier to pull up an app with App Dialer or the Action Drawer rather than from some small selection that is cycled based on location or time.

For all the people complaining about battery life, have you ever thought about a Mophie case?

Interesting, I had issues and changing the cable seemed to help. Mind you, the previous cable was from an early Kindle so I guess that doesn't need much power. (I've got so many micro usb cables I've lost track where they were from originally, but I'd kind assumed they were all the same.)

I have htc one, if it matters.

I would like to make it so that during the day, if I get an email, my phone vibrates, and if I get a call, either vibrate or ring depending on setting.

However, I want my "night mode" to not vibrate for email, and to allow phone calls to still ring through for emergencies.

How? Seems like I shouldn't have to use Tasker to get there.

For email I use touchdown and in settings has an option to disable notifications during "non peak hours". Does your email app have this preference?

What's your experience with this been like?

I hadn't heard of it before, and a brief search shows medium to good reviews, although not cheap. Is it worth it, highly effective, etc? Strong preference for any version/model of the case over another? Thx.

Interesting, though im surprised that the link at the end of the article..leads to a USB printer cable.

"So, if you need a cable that charges at an adequate speed, heed the advice of Esteef and go with 28/24 gauge USB cables."

Something interesting he touched on.

Cables getting loose? It's actually the cable and the port on the device getting loose. A $5 cable going bad is a small inconvenience. The port on a $1,200 tablet is a much different issue. I know people who have burned through multiple phones because the port loosened so much it wouldn't charge.

With USB 3.1 that will come out later this year, almost all of the stress will go to the cable instead of sharing the strain with the port. This means even the most abusive of consumers will no longer have this problem.

It's also completely symmetrical, meaning it will no longer take three tries to plug the cable in.
It's also going to use the same plug on both ends of the cable. The ubiquitous USB A port we've seen since the 90s will soon be gone.

Anyone have a good resource for picking the right carrier/plan? I'll post details below in case anyone wants to dig in, but in general if anyone has a good place to look to try to sort out best options would appreciate it!

tl;dr details:
  • Am currently a VZW customer
  • Am eligible for an upgrade in general in April, but can upgrade now if I want to go with their new Edge plan
  • We currently have 2 phones on the plan, one Droid Razr Maxx and one Iphone 4S
  • We have unlimited data; we pay $170 per month for access
  • Razr Maxx performance has really deteriorated in the last six months, phone is regularly very slow, bordering on unusable at times. Iphone works fine.
  • We generally use 3-4 GB of data a month, though have gone over that 2-3 times in the last 2 years
  • If we upgrade w/ VZW we will have to give up unlimited data and go with a set data amount
  • If we go with the Note 3 and Iphone 5S, normal upgrade would look like:
  • Subsidized phone price = $500
  • Plan access = $150/mo with 4 GB data, $160/mo with 6 GB data
  • If we went with their edge promotion, we would not have an upfront payment
  • Monthly charge would be $130/mo w/ 4 GB data, $140/mo w/ 6 GB data
  • Plus, the price of the unsubsidized phone would be split into 24 pieces and added to the monthly bill, would be $57/mo more
  • In total we would pay $37/mo more w/ edge, which over 2 years would be $888
  • So you are in essence paying $388 over two years for the following benefits (as far as I can tell):
  • 1. Don't need to pay anything up front
  • 2. Can upgrade phone every year instead of two years
  • 3. Tethering is included

None of these is worth $190 bucks a year to me, so would probably go with the standard upgrade cycle.

Would love any thoughts on if I am thinking about anything wrong above, which other companies I should look at other than VZW (I'm in Las Vegas fwiw), and anything else I should consider.

Again, appreciate any help!

Was in your same position last week, and my wife and I ended up going with straight talk and 2 nexus 5's. That runs us $90 month for unlimited talk, text and 2.5 GB of data each. Tack on $775 for the 2 phones and we're going to be ahead about $500/year.

It's only been 3 days, but I'm really glad we made the switch.

Is your 3-4 GB/mo each, or combined? If you can get by on 2.5 Gb/mo high speed data + whatever else slow, TMo or Straight Talk are both great, inexpensive options. Def. go TMo if you happen to care about international data. Def. go Straight Talk if TMo's network doesn't cover you well and as such you need ATT, Or you can try out one for one month, the other for another month, and see which works best.
