Thoughts on regular Pixel ($500) vs XL ($650)? Have a 5x with a 5.2 in screen. Having irrational fears of going down in screen size for some reason.

They're the same phone outside of screen size and battery - which is usually the case when comparing the size models of phones (e.g. iPhone 8 vs 8+). So uhhh I guess my thoughts are get whichever size you like better.

Personally, when I tried a large phone (Nexus 6P) I hate how big it felt in my pocket and that it was hard to use 1 handed, and screen size not being that great of a benefit. For girls though, I often give a bonus point to the bigger screen because they don't have the same pocket issues, but 1 handed use is still divisive for some.

ETA: Forgot to mention battery. Battery always better on the bigger phones, so consider that too. And personally, I don't care much about battery optimization because I'm always near chargers and charge 2 hours/day in the car.

Also all the "are you at X location or transit stop?" stuff can just stay gone I'm pretty sure.
how did you do this?

I recently disabled both of these myself actually:

For the wifi one, if you swipe right on the notification and click the gear, you can then access settings for it and lower its priority to "low" or something like that.

For the commute one, if you go to the maps app, then settings -> notifications, you'll find a way to turn off a bunch, commute being one of them.

FYI to note 8 users. Note 7 pens are identical to the 8 pens. Note 7 replacement pens are 7.99-12.99 (eBay) , note 8s are 49.99

For me it is in wifi preferences, a setting called "open network notification"

recall that pixel xl 1st gen had months of delays.
i'd hoped that they'd fixed that before v2 release but it seems like they haven't.

I hope you know that phone doesn't run iOS...

just got the pixel 2 and transferred everything over from my pixel 1 but having a weird issue where some of my contacts aren't showing up in hangouts (which I use as my primary texting app). the contacts show up if I just go into the normal contacts section of the phone but not if I search the name via hangouts. any idea how to fix this?

Did you try uninstall reinstall of the hangout app already?

that seems to have fixed it as far as being able to search contacts via hangouts, but some of my recent text threads are still showing up just as a phone number rather than name, even though the name comes up if I click the "people" option from that same thread.

On my phone it shows orange in notifications area when you set it to battery saving mode; maybe you did that by accident.

This appears to have fixed itself.

New issue is with SwiftKey - I have the setting that makes space bar automatically complete toggled off, but hitting space bar is still completing the next predicted word and I can't make it stop...

Wait, I thought Hangouts no longer does SMS? Why can't I find an option to turn that on?

Hangouts still does SMS for Project Fi customers. I think it also still works with Google Voice numbers, not 100% sure though.

Just popping in here to say that the Essential phone is a no-brainer at the new price point of $499. I got it as a pre-order for $699 and they are offering me a $200 credit on a new phone as compensation. If someone is interested in the phone and wants to split the credit with me, send me a pm.

So it's a no-brainer but you don't want it?

No replaceable battery, yet not water-resistant, lousy camera compared to last year's phones, and no earphone jack?

It should be less than that, 399 is about it's price level comparison.

I had to get a new pixel as well because of this issue. Mine would die at 50%-60%

I watched the MKBHD review on that a few months ago. He's pretty fair and slow to condemn most devices and his review was fairly scathing. I get the impression that the project came out of some people running some financial models rather than an innovator trying to to solve a problem. Even with the discount its still just a pretty looking paperweight in my opinion. Bad camera, no headphone jack, sluggish etc.

I already have one. The company is offering those that bought it for 699 a $200 discount on a new phone because they've decided to reduce the price on the phone. So I have both the code and the phone...

Yeah it's not waterproof and the camera isn't the best you can get on a smartphone, but with recent updates it's a fine camera. It's an amazing phone. Go to a Sprint store and check it out.

The company was started by Andy Rubin, the founder of Android. The phone had some problems with the launch, but most of the issues have been solved with software updates. The camera is far from bad and it's not at all sluggish. In fact, quite the opposite. There is an adapter for headphones but I prefer cordless with bluetooth. I would check out the essential subreddit for some other perspectives.

Yea not sure how naming the founder refutes anything I said. I'm sure it's a fine device in a vacuum but relative to what's on the market it's a bad buy.
