I think that was only a problem years ago.

On another note, one of my best friends who is a surgeon and in the hospital all the time with ****ty/no service just found some setting in his iPhone that allows him to text via WiFi with non-imessagers like myself. Apparently that's been available for a long time, but he never knew about it and lolapple keeps that setting off by default?

Anyways, just thought that was funny, as he always complained about me being one of the only people without imessage. Dumb doctors.

So I bought a new phone and the default keyboard doesn't have gesture/swipe typing, what's the go to keyboard that has this right now?

Thats with I thought about my phone until I hit the setting icon (gear) and it had a swipe option that I could turn on.

SwiftKey is a no brainer. Soon you ll be able to use it to communicate with your windows 10 computer through SwiftKey

Spent a good ten minutes looking through every single possible setting and being unable to find one

The settings button might be to the left of the space bar and combined with the voice to type button. Press and hold it then press the gear icon, scroll down and change keyboard swipe to continuous input.

GBoard is good.
SwiftKey is good.
Swype is good.

Different strokes for different folks.

I'm currently using GBoard.

So, my oneplus 3 completely died and needed a new motherboard, so phone was completely wiped. I therefore decided to root this time.

What root apps should I definitely be using now and why?

Sixfour is the default keyboard the Google keyboard? If so there's 100% a swipe feature, I use it all the time.

here's a dumb question...

is there an app that scans coupons? not those pain in the ass apps that offer coupons and alert you about it every damn day, just one that can scan them and keep them on file? i often read the paper and see supermarket coupons i want but have zero desire to snip and carry with me.

Wouldn't the one marked "Camera" work?

Nope, something called Android Keyboard. My old phone (old enough to be running Jelly Bean) had the default Google keyboard, but I couldn't stand Gboard when it tried to update to that version of it. Will try Swiftkey instead

Copy paste from phone to pc or pc to phone throught SwiftKey seems like a fine feature to me. Considering SwiftKey is already number one keyboard without additional stuff.

Android users should be happy with the new clipboard feature. One of the most popular third-party keyboards, Swiftkey, will soon be used to share clipboards between devices. Copying a link or a line of text between Android and Windows is not very convenient right now. as users have to handle such transfers with tools like Pushbullet or AirDroid, or good old messaging. Nevertheless, Microsoft’s cloud-powered Clipboard will make things much easier. The cloud clipboard is similar to Universal Clipboard, but unlike Apple’s solution, it’s not limited to one ecosystem. The clipboard feature will soon be implemented into Office applications too.

Oh I assumed incorrectly - this does sound awesome. I'll have to see if I can use this with my work's firewalls and then maybe switch back to SK.

I switched to Gboard a while ago, found it to be a much smoother experience; SK would lag a tiny bit every now and then, while GB is basically flawless. The spacebar cursor movement and sliding back key gestures are also amazing. I think I also prefer the punctuation layout, but not sure about that without looking at SwiftKey again. Auto correct took a minor (1-5%) step backwards, but after using it for a while it's as flawless as SwiftKey was.

I'll give SwiftKey another go now though if this clipboard thing works. I think it's optimal to not be loyal and keep tabs on what's out there.

ETA: Oh wait, crap, you said this was a Win 10 thing? We're still on 7 at work... There goes that thought.

I assumed you were using self checkout.

i have no idea about a coupon app, but just learned about the following a few weeks ago: there's a google drive widget called "drive scan". put it on a homescreen, click it, take picture from coupon and it's automatically has contrast enhanced and can be "straightened out" and it's automatically uploaded in a specified drive folder. from there it should be machine readable, aka you can easily search for it later.
i use it to take a quick image of all my receipts that i need to digitize.

again: no idea if you can use the coupons afterwards for selfcheckout or at a cashier. but maybe it helps.

alright android thread, whats my best choice/value for a new off contract phone right now? Wife and I have had Nexus 5's, then 5x's most recently. Her's went completely busto last night. Not really digging the pixel at $650, but have really like the nexus line. I looke at oneplus, but it seems like only the 3T is available right now at $450? I'd like to stay at $300ish if possible, but not sure of my choices these days.

Actually the best i've found so far is a new 5x for $300. Mine is still working fine after 2+ years, so maybe thats not a bad deal.

if you're somewhat tech savy, you're surely getting the best value with a chinese phone ordered on aliexpress or similar. i never done it, but it shouldn't be that complicated by now. but it has clear downsides with probably very few (if any) software updates, the need to maybe manually flash ROMs, limited (if any) guarantee etc.
you also need to make sure that all the LTE frequencies that your carrier uses are supported.
otherwise: moto g (5th generation) is the goto solid-budget phone. just checked, it's 229$ @ bestbuy, i am sure you'll find it somewhere else even cheaper. everything should work properly, no hussle with anything, solid update policy (for that price level). etc.
everything should work properly and speed should be enough for all every day tasks. (well, i suggest you read some reviews, that's just my general impression of moto g from memory).

i just saw that you can get a refurbished samsung galaxy s7 for under $400. (again, that's just what bestbuy showed because i had no idea about american price levels. there have to be much better specific deals for it out there if you look).
i am EXTREMELY happy with mine. i think it's close to a perfect phone. so if you want to spend a little more, that's imho WAY better value than a 5x for 300 bucks.

i saw some new GS6's for around $300 also. My wife just uses her phone for FB, IG, pictures, etc, so that should be more than enough. Not sure its worth an extra $100 for an S7, especially since its refurbished.

Got my keyboard working fine re: posts above, but I've got an issue whereby my phone's battery will suddenly start dropping off a cliff in terms of percentage left when it gets down to around 35-40%, regardless of what I'm doing - it's done it today whereby I'm checking it every quarter of an hour or so and it's been dropped 2%, dropped 2%, dropped 2%, dropped 20%, and it even managed to do the same overnight. Any ideas?

imo, that a signal of a worn out battery.
