So a replacement Samsung Note 7 burned up and caused a Southwest flight to return to the gate to evacuate the passengers.

Was in a vzw store this weekend and saw the note 7 was still being sold at full price. Kind of surprised they aren't trying to counteract the bad press. Maybe a second round of 'splosions will result in some deals.

wtf. anyone know what causes the delivery date to vary between apparently the end of october to the end of november? just the 1 day earlier order date or think it has to do with the specific SKU you choose? I would definitely switch colors or storage sizes if it meant getting it a month earlier.

What is the rationale for buying a $769 Pixel XL when the 6p has almost identical hardware specs and is only $500.

$250 for an improved camera seems expensive.

snapdragon 821 >>>> 810
1 year newer == 1 year longer support
slightly smaller
google assistant from the beginning afaik (&stuff like unlimited photos storage)
& camera as you said

how much that is worth to you depends on many factors.

Though calling the 6p "$500" is also a bit unfair. I don't know the market now but they were sub $400 all day long recently.

Anyone think that Samsung is going to double down on bad pub and keep the note 7 at full price for the foreseeable future?
Verizon has it listed at $864.

I'm so curious who is thinking this is the way to go with a defective product.

Bestbuy is taking preorders for the Pixel and the Pixel XL. They are $700 and $800 but also include a $100 BestBuy gift card and a free Chromecast.

we ll see if google drop prices like samsung or lg does after 6 months.
The biggest problem of the nexus brand was the linear pricing that was great at launch then not competitive anymore for months untill a new model was realeased and you finally had a decent price again.
If the pixel get released at 700 and drop in prices gradually to 350-400 after 6 months they ll make way more money and the phone quality can raise and still be budget friendly for non early adopters.

Given how much time I spend on my phone, $250 for any kind of marginal improvements sounds ultra worth it.

I'm waiting to see the comparisons. Right now it's basically all just hype/marketing regurgitation that defines the quality of the pixel.

One phone is built by HTC when the previous one was Huawei.
Google is aiming for high end phone. It's not like Apple is already selling similarly priced phone.
If I had a choice between a Samsung phone or a pixel for the same price pixel sound like an easy choice.

Google sent me an email telling me that due to my early order, they'll be sending me a code for a free Daydream VR headset once they become available too.

Go me!

Yea got the Daydream as well.

I think mostly it's Camera + Google software support, and we're waiting on battery things.

Also tiny bit smaller is very important to me

You can see the estimated delivery date (in weeks) as you are picking between the various options on the Google store, and this does change depending on the configuration.

edit: re-read, I think you're asking why this is, not how you can tell? Google forecasts demand for each configuration (what percent will be black vs silver vs blue, how many people want to spend an extra $100 to get more storage, etc), and then there are also sometimes manufacturing issues will prevent them from building as many of something as they want (might have issues getting a color correct, for example). In this case, the blue was sold out so quickly that they either dramatically underestimated demand or they had some sort of issue preventing them from building enough. Then it just comes down to what customers actually chose and how well they predicted that.

An extra year of support, better battery life (very important to me), smaller size (6p is too big for me, and yes those couple of millimeters make a big difference), better camera, Daydream, better looking (IMO), and I'm not terribly price sensitive especially considering how much time I spend on my phone and the fact that I generally keep them for 2+ years.

I'm not disagreeing with your premise that the 6p is a much better value and perhaps a better choice for many people. But those are my reasons for getting XL.

Both phones have the same size battery. Is the Pixel that much more efficient in it's power consumption ?

The primary uses that crush battery performance are GPS and wireless radios. I don't see that changing too much between the models.

I'm not saying that the Pixel is not a better phone, only that the 6p seems like a much superior value. I guess I just don't value those marginal improvements very much. Also I prefer larger screens to smaller.

Snapdragon 821 is more battery efficient than 810 (which had relatively major thermal issues), and smaller/newer screen uses less power as well.

Google's battery ratings (which should use a consistent methodology between the two phones) has the XL showing 30-40% better battery life in standby time, talk time, internet use time (wifi and LTE), video playback, audio playback. Obviously that doesn't mean that real-world battery use will be 40% better, but it should be noticeably better.

Great post all around, thanks. Gonna change up some specs and see if I can move up that delivery time.

Ive been contemplating a new phone, but looking at the specs of the Pixel is making me want to wait. Just doesnt seem that impressive for such an expensive phone.

Most specs dont seem like much of an improvement over my 2 year old Droid Turbo, and the battery (which is near the top of the list in importance for me) is not nearly as big.
Also the standard Pixel has a smaller screen and lower resolution. Not to mention a 2.15 Ghz processor vs 2.7 in the Turbo. Really the only improvement appears to be a newer version of Snapdragon and the latest Android OS.
I was expecting it to blow my phone out of the water (maybe it does in actual use?) but based on specs alone it seems like an expensive downgrade.

Between 2008 and 2013, it seems new models crushed their year older competition. Now there just isn't much more you can pack in a new phone to make it stand out. Sure the new models are better, but usually not really worth the expense of upgrading in my opinion.

Almost pulled the trigger on the pixel but read some post on Reddit from a best buy employee saying there was a big difference between the Pixel and Nexus 6p speakers.
