They're enforcing the $20 more per month regardless of if you sign a new contract or not, beginning sometime in November. This applies to unlimited data plan customers out of contract, which I think is all of them, so Verizon is well within their rights to change pricing. I'm surprised it took Verizon this long, honestly.

You actually cannot sign a new contract and get/keep unlimited data with Verizon. People who still have unlimited data plans have stayed on the old plan and either (a) stuck with their old phone, (b) bought new phones outright (used or full price for new), or (c) used technical/billing loopholes (most/all of which have since been closed) in order to get subsidized pricing on a new phone but stay on their old plan.

right, I'll soon be paying $20 more per month regardless of anything else. so that's not really a factor.

as for the $300 trade in, I've gotten conflicting information. the guy at the store told me it's for new customers only, but I read online that it's for existing customers who agree to the device payment plan (no idea why this should be a requirement). also I still have no idea which phones are or aren't eligible for $300 credit (ie will Verizon give me $300 for my Moto X, which I just bought for $85?)

but I went to the store and didn't really even like the Turbo 2 (so big and bulky) that I likely won't even bother, even if Verizon is throwing me $215 in EV.

It's really $300? My co-worker just did a trade in, it was any phone for $100.

So buying full priced phones and selling on Ebay is the best way to go now?

eBay takes 10-15% of your sale. Sell on Craigslist.

Is there a new android coming out soon or is now an "ok" time to buy one? I currently have a Samsung Galaxy S4. It works for me. As long as I can go online, get email, talk and text I'm a happy camper. Ohh and some pictures. I need a new phone because my memory is full. I have no idea how that happened so I guess I want a phone with lots of memory, a great battery that lasts a long time and a decent camera. I was planning on just getting the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge because that seems like the newest version of my phone. Is that correct? I'm open to all suggestions.

I love the GS4. I think it still holds up to the current phones. If you're low maintenance I'd just buy an SD card and a new battery.

There's pretty much constantly new phones coming out, so I wouldn't think TOO hard about the timing unless there's a phone on the horizon you're super excited about. It also doesn't sound like you need the latest and greatest either. So maybe even purposefully NOT being on the front lines is a good strategy.

Thanks for the tips! I'm due for an upgrade with Verizon but it looks like with that new payment thing I might just be better off getting a new SD card. I googled it for the S4 and apparently a lot of people were complaining about changing them. Apparently my phone is telling me I don't even have one when I try to transfer stuff to it to free up memory. Is this standard or is my phone just not recognizing the stock SD card?

Basically, the problems with my current phone are: I can't get texts, take pictures, look at pictures, some apps don't work. I've deleted pretty much everything I can but still no memory.

What is taking up your storage? Don't just delete random things. Seems likely you have a ton of photos/videos saved which is a lousy reason to buy a new phone.
Go in to settings: storage to find out.

I think you may be confused but I'm not sure. The S4 doesn't come with expandable storage you have to purchase a micro SD card separately. In the file Explorer "SD card" in the root folder is the on board storage. When you insert an SD card it'll show up as a separate folder. Then I'd recommend transferring your media to the SD and keeping all apps on the internal.

I tried this route a few times. It kept coming up with nothing. I'd delete something that I thought took up a bunch space like apps and all my videos/podcasts/pdfs to no avail.

I agree. A terrible reason to buy a new phone. I like the S4 and don't really see a need to upgrade it.

I think you just nailed it. I'm super confused as to why when I delete a bunch of stuff it doesn't give me room to work. For example, if I delete a text message I should have room for 1 new text message. It doesn't seem to work that way directly.

I think I need to get a micro SD Card and transfer stuff over there so it doesn't clog up my phone. I have some cool pics or vids or whatever and hopefully I can just move them to the new SD Card. I tried to do that under the memory warning alert but it told me there was no SD Card.

Thank you all for your help. I'll get an SD Card and hopefully I can get back to normal.

Just wipe your phone and get a sd card. Maybe flash your phone with a light custom rom. No reason to change phone if you like it

it's not a good idea to recommend someone to "maybe flash your phone with a light custom rom" if that person showed the (lack of) technical skills that villan showed here.
@villan: back up your videos and photos (either on your computer or for example with the google photos app). then do a factory reset of your phone. this will delete "everything" from your phone. so make sure that you have everything backuped that you need again afterwards (like specific texts etc).
all your contacts and some other stuff is automatically backed up by google.

this should give you enough free storage again and should be your next step, because you say you're still very happy with your phone besides the memory problem.

I agree. You need to be willing to invest the time to learn the process and to tinker around with the ROM.

Google fi looks pretty awesome. I requested an invite about a week ago.

Does anyone know about how long it usually takes, or is it random? I am in a metropolitan area with great coverage so the shouldn't be an issue.

Edit: nvm, it looks like you can check your invite status at: https://fi.google.com/signup

Thanks for all the tips guys! Good read. I'm not very technologically advanced wrt phones. I'm going to stop by the store a grab an SD card and transfer my stuff (what I have left lol) onto there. No need for a new phone and I don't think I need to clear out the whole phone but I have been ignoring an OS update for about a year or so, maybe I do. We'll see. I'll keep you guys updated.

Google Fiber is years ahead of cable internet. I worked at TWC until last year, and most, of our areas had 50 mbps up, and 5 down max(LA, N.Y., Dallas, KC, anywhere GF is, have 100 mbps, 5 mbps down)and IIRC, Google Fiber is at least 4 times faster if not more.

I requested an invite at the end of September and got the invite about 2 weeks later. I live in Chicago. I'm literally setting up my 6P (apps are loading) as I type this and about to dive into Google Fi.

Maybe a dumb question, but is there any (easy) way to move an app from one phone to another? There's an app on my Moto X that is apparently no longer on the play store, and I want it on my 6P.

Also, install and run google photos and have it back up all the folders on the device, that way you don't risk losing all your photos and video.
set it to upload at "High Quality" and not "Original" and you have unlimited space to backup photos/video.
