i have roaming wifi access thru out the city, i use a wifi hotspot on my phone to share w friends when there's no free wifi around. i dont want to give all my friends the password to the roaming wifi otherwise they will use it when im not around and it counts against my data usage

Ah okay. Yeah that's not technically possible - the wifi chips in phones can only receive OR transmit; they can't do both simultaneously. So you can't share an existing wifi network with someone else over a different network.

strange because it works for the pc (as i mentioned above using virtual wifi router) and the same wifi chips r used everywhere w mobiles just being one application

i imagine its not a restriction of the wifi chip, but rather a restriction of the android subsystem

Any galaxy s6 and s6 edge owners here?

Any feedback? Especially if you went from a prev Samsung and used the swappable battery and ext storage.

The big one is whether fast charge can replace a decent size swappable battery.

I've heard the S6 has some pretty bad RAM management.

fast charging is one of its strong points

The battery life on my S6 is horrible. If I'm outside and have brightness at 100% and using the Internet on and off the battery can discharge to 50% in 3 or 4 hours. If I had it to do again I would have gotten a different phone.

Having a weird problem here that I cannot seem to figure out.

Note 4, 5.0.1

If I try and change the display timeout time to anything other than 15 seconds, it changes until I shut the screen off via the side button and then goes back to 15 seconds in the settings.

I've also tried turning on the smart stay that is supposed to keep the screen on when I am looking at it, and it will not do that either. The notification icon pops up for is at 15 seconds of no touch like it's looking for me, and then the screen dims and shuts off.

Any ideas here?

I'm currently an iphone 5 user. I will be upgrading in the next month and I'm pretty sure I'm switching to android. What phone should I get? Looking for good battery life and a better camera to start

seems like every year i buy a new android phone and every year it has the same battery life as the last if not worse battery life. they keep adding **** like 4K screens even though the display is like 5 inches and all this other useless stuff (to me) that is completely killing battery life. I want a phone that i could have the screen on for 18 hours using wifi/4G the entire time and browsing the internet, twitter, whatever. Is there such a phone? Previous 2 phones have been Droid Razr Maxx HD and LG G3. Both have failed miserably at providing the excellent battery life they advertise. I have verizon as a carrier so i know that is a leak and causing me to lose a lot of battery life.

I'm a network engineer. When I'm bringing up a new site, I tether my work laptop to my phone as a wifi hotspot. That allows me to VPN to the mother ship.

Crucial! The stack of materials we used to have to haul or ship, gone!

edit: I use a Nexus 5 on Tmobile and aside from the stupid MMS not working over wifi, yeah, the SMS sucks as well. If I have multiple conversations going it will bind up. Users report my messages send in duplicate.

I like kik, but given its scammer reputation, it's a hard sell. Very snappy response with it, particularly with pics.

If you had the Maxx and it failed miserably than I doubt there's anything that will satisfy you since that had about the biggest battery around at the time, IIRC. Last year's Verizon Droid turbo has a 3950mah battery which is the biggest I'm aware of. Turbo 2 is expected to be announced on October and is rumored to be a variant of the recently-announced moto x Style. The Style has yet to be hands-on-tested for batt life. It has a 3000 mah batt but the Verizon variant could well have a larger one. Obv there are other things besides size that affect batt life, but there you go.
Oh and last year's OnePlus One reportedly gets tremendous life.

This is a pretty random thought but I used my Galaxy S4 for a little bit yesterday. One kind of intangible about the S series is the haptic feedback. It just feels better than other phones (daily driver is the Oneplus One). IMO the S4/S5 were the closest thing we've seen to a perfect smartphone.

I have an Ultimate Ears bluetooth speaker that I can't get paired with my Galaxy Tab 4. It worked easily with an ipad. I even tried turning off wifi while I tried to do the pairing. The Tab "finds" a couple things but they are long alpha-num strings that don't connect when selected anyway. Not sure what they are. Any ideas?

I would always wait a few weeks and read several reviews of the update for your particular phone before installing. My original HTC m8 got ****ed when I just threw lollipop on it without doing my due diligence

Good advice. Although even better if you have the time would be to figure out a way to create a NANDROID backup without hindering the OTA update process. That way you can update at will and if it sucks just restore your NANDROID.

Actually you could just flash a custom recovery and then grab the update images from Google and not worry about OTAs.

with power banks becoming more compact and higher capacity, is battery life really that important as long as u get 8-10 hrs of local use. add in fast charging capabilities and it becomes even less of an issue

Yeah the Maxx was about as good as you can get, at least for Verizon phones. I've got the Turbo now and I love it. I get 6+ hours of screen-on time which is about the best you can do with a stock (non-rooted/ROM'd) phone. But if the Maxx didn't even come close to working for you, then you either had a dud or just have unrealistic expectations. I mean, I too wish that mfgs prioritized battery life more, but what you're asking for (bolded above) is so far past the current standard I don't know what to say. The absolute best phones get around 7-8 hours of screen-on time and you're asking for 18?

The OnePlus One and Sony Z3/Z3C got excellent battery life but aren't available on Verizon. The Sony Z3V is a bastardized version but also has great battery life, so maybe you could look at the Sony Z4V or whatever the next Verizon version is called, but be warned that it is not as well supported update-wise (the Z3V is still on Kit-Kat, lol).

Having to charge your phone twice a day (overnight and then once each day) means the battery's capacity is going to drop much quicker than normal and now you have a dud for a phone in a year and a half. That's not even considering the downsides to having to carry around a powerbank or charger and plugging in when close to an outlet.

Why does the iPhone or Galaxy series feel the need to get thinner every year (iphone 3G - 12.6mm thick; iPhone 6 - 6.9 mm) when they're already ludicrously slim and having to resort to camera bulges just to fit everything? Make the phone thick enough to have a flat back and fill the extra space with battery. The iPhone's side bezels are a much bigger hindrance to one-handed usability than the thickness is, they should be working on that.
