finally pulled the trigger on the Moto X Dev Edition for $349 off contract.

I'm sure I could have done without the Dev Edition but didn't really care about customization, and wanted the 32gb, so...shrug.

this will allow me to much more easily tweak the kernel and other settings, though I don't plan on ROM'ing. anyone have any suggestions to optimize battery or any other improvements?

Ive disliked the GMail since the last update (prettier, but worse workflow) and the built in email (and others I tried like K9) sucked a lot for getting my Exchange based university email but CM so far has worked extremely well. Seems to support every type of email anyone uses and also yahoo which no one does. Supports the label stuff in GMail, though that can get a bit fiddly to use if you use a bunch of accounts with a bunch of labels - but as far as a work in progress goes the app is really solid.
It's a nice app but my main/only gripe is that I'm used to my Priority Inbox on GMail now, something that CloudMagic doesn't seem to support (?).

Found this through reddit:

Was going to post my favourites but there are a lot a nice options (if you like the holo theme - I do).

Thanks for this. Don't know how I missed Klyph before. Been looking for an excuse to delete Fb for a long time. I picked up WikiExplorer too. Love the sliding menu.

I'm 90% going to buy Klyph and finally rid myself of the terrible official app, even if I do only use Facebook out of choice maybe twice a week now.

Really like Tweedle too, free version of Falcon essentially.

Has anyone had issue with a Nexus5 not charging.
Ive got two new N5, mine seems to be fine, but for the third time that i can recall here in the last week, my wife plugs hers(using the stock charger/cable that came with the N5)_ in at night to see the charge indicator, and wakes up the next day with the battery almost fully discharged.
Ive switched the cable she uses and we will see. just curious if others have experienced the same.

Can someone double check I am not being dumb about phone bands and travelling abroad.

My old N7100 is listed on gsmarena as having:
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100

In the Philippines the bands are apparently:
GSM 900/1800 2 carriers
GSM 900 1 carrier
GSM 1800 1 carrier
Which this website seems to more or less agree with:
http://globemobile31.blogspot.co.uk/...ency-Band.html

So, as I understand it I can pick up any SIM and the phone will work on all the networks in 2G without issues, but will only work in 3 of the 4 networks on 3G?

I havent had any issues with my N5. Giving it a quick google the only problem I can see is that some were charging really slowly for some reason.

Assuming it isnt some issue with the charge cable (easy to check by charging your phone with her cable) it sounds like some one off issue with your wife's phone.

switched some cables around, we will see tonight if that makes any difference.
google also reveals some issues with certain cables including the stock cable that came with the N5

I am sure that most here are already aware of this, but Google is selling Motorola to Lenovo.

http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2014/...ying-motorola/

I pretty much hate this because I really liked the prospect of nearly stock android and a ton of useful beyond belief features, especially since I was about to pull the trigger on both a Moto G and a Moto X (the G for my son, the X for my daughter), as well as perhaps a Moto X as a backup for myself. I am worried that updates will, in the near future, suffer.

Ugghhh, really, the Motorola lines started looking really innovative. I really hope that they don't change their current path. I would hate a return to the times of custom UIs and useless features like those offered a la Moto Blur.

Is there anything in particular that scares you about lenovo? I love their laptops...

Yeah I'd be expecting more things out of Motorola now, not less.

Is there any email app that will let you set the sync options by time? The old htc stock email used to have that option but I haven't found it in anything since.

I am just worried about how the update cycle will change for these devices now. Before I had the expectation that Motorola phones would probably update quickly to newer versions of android and remain fairly stock. I am worried that this purchase will bring a crappier UI to bear and that Motorola will be more lethargic in updating its lines (and perhaps only include a single update to its OS over the lifetime of any given phone). I really enjoyed the idea that when I bought a Motorola phone I felt like I was getting a Google device.

If Lenovo really lets Motorola continue operating relatively independently and if Motorola continues to run a stripped down, nearly-stock version of Android (with only its recent and very useful additions to the OS), then I could still be very happy with them.

I did really like with Moto did with the X, and the G as well. and I own a Razr M as well - they have been the only company putting nice hardware in small display sizes. so I hope that continues.

I'm loving the Nexus 5 so far. Moving up from the S2X (t989) to this phone is like moving from a 1970s station wagon to a ferrari. I was able to restore most app settings by using Titanium Backup and Restore; text messages, whatsapp messages/images, pictures, website cookies, etc.

I just ordered a Black 32GB Nexus 5 after a guy next to me at a poker table had one and I screwed around with it. I've been with Apple and have had a 3G and 4. This is my first experience with Android, but I needed a change as my 4 has been screwing up and I didn't want to wait for their announcement and maybe this will be something I enjoy better.

What are some of the first things I should look at getting for the phone to experience Android better and really utilize this new phone on a day to day basis. I just started working at a local IT company as well and will be accessing a lot of DropBox files and stuff that we use to manage clients so that will be nice to have more screen as well.

I'm also on ATT, so will I be able to just take out my microsim from iPhone 4 and pop it into the Nexus or will I have to go there to get something straightened out?

Thanks for any tips or recommendations.

Wow iPhone to nexus 5 congrats. Everytime I pick up a family member's iPhone I die a little inside. I've had the epic 4g, the s3 and now on the nexus 5. Go to xda forums find the nexus 5 section and do some reading about rooting and recoveries. If you want app recommendations there's a lot of helpful YouTube vids.

Sorry don't know anything about AT&T or SIM cards. I was on Sprint forever and just moved to t mobile.

Google gutted the company, installed their own managers and reorganised top down Moto Mobility. I read that they are keeping 5% of the company, too.

With no new info I would bet they will stay more or less identical to what they were. Especially given the lead time means the next two years of production are basically locked down by what Google did already.

I have a nexus 7 that isn't working. It will not turn on no matter what I do. I called Google to see what they could do (hoping to send it back and they just ship a new one to me).

Even though I tried everything already and told the guy that nothing worked, he had me try the stuff again. I did everything and still nothing. Then he says, lets try one last thing. Let's do a factory reset. I am a little puzzled since the unit doesn't work, but go along with it. He then says to go to the settings menu and tries to get me to do a factory reset which clearly isn't possible since the device won't even turn on...wtf... I thought Google knew their stuff. lol. Anyway, I just thought I would share since I got a chuckle out of it.

Is it charging? My USB connection got damaged over time and it wouldn't charge.

Does the battery charging icon appear when you plug in the charger?

Might have the same problem I had, USB connection broke. I bought the dock as it uses the 4 pins on the side to charge and I'm back in business. The dock isn't cheap though(1/5 of the tablet) so if you try it out make sure you can return it if its not the problem.

I am sending it back to Asus (they made the nexus tablet) and they are going to look at it. Thankfully, its under a year old so its still under their warranty.
