I would go and ask for a new sim card, hopefully there's no problem doing it, I've had it done *for no charge* , but they weren't old phones.

Friend is looking for something cheap and missed the deal on the Moto G5 plus for $170...back up to $220.
I picked up an LG G5 brand new over the summer for $250. Amazing value. Quad HD, removable battery, SD card. It also has this charging cradle accessory that you can pick up for $40 (including extra battery) that allows you to charge a spare battery and your phone simultaneously.

Down to $230 on B&H Photo.

Have had exactly zero bootloops in 6 months of heavy use.

Hopefully you stay lucky. My G3, G4, and G5 all started boot looping within a year.... dumb me kept getting sucked in by the good deals and amazing specs and always regretted it. Switched to a Pixel and been very happy.

Is it fair to say the reason this thread is mostly dead (except for technical questions) is because most phones now are pretty solid?

Probably. Pretty much anything labeled "flagship" is a solid phone nowadays, the question becomes specific features and price.

I switched to a lg v20 earlier this year and am soooo pissed I let sprint sell me a HTC m9 for 760 bucks on contract 2 years ago

Got the v20 new for about 220 on eBay.And its just as good if not better.

Yea phones have been really solid for the past 18-24 months (few exceptions like the Essential). Actually to the point where buying a current flagship is probably a waste of money.

looks like i am probably going to have to replace my phone, leaning towards something in the 200-300 range if possible... sounds like moto G5S, lg v20, axon 7 mini are all pretty well regarded... it looks like i could also just grab a galaxy s7 for under 300 pretty easily instead of getting the latest model, which would probably be fine for me...

Yea I mean what is there really to talk about other than which phone should I buy and how do I fix this problem. Problems are getting rarer and rarer, and most people know what they want in a phone at this point. Obviously those two categories aren't zero, and equivalently, this thread isn't completely dead, but I think those two describe a lot of the reduced activity.

Then there's the fringe topics like custom ROMing and extreme customization, which is also down I'd imagine from phones just being better/smoother (and I'd argue a better/more mature technology offsets SOME of the desire for customization, the part that's related to optimizing the experience).

The Android vs iPhone debate isn't even super interesting anymore as the two OS's have converged quite a bit. It's basically better notifications/UI vs iMessage.

Is it just my social circle or are more Americans switching from SMS and iMessage to Whatsapp?

I wish. Probably just your social circle.

I don't envision something like Whatsapp all of a sudden "taking hold" in the US. Inertia is huge, and SMS will probably carry forward especially if it smoothly evolves through to something like Google's RCS Universal Profile.

My bill was $18.11 this month. Have I mentioned that I love Fi?

I thought Fi was $20 + $10/gig? Is your $18 number there misleading?

I use about 3 gig/month, so my bill would be $50. I pay $100 for 2 unlimited lines on T-Mobile right now, so seems like I'm right at the breakeven point - except my fiance has an iPhone...

Ok so your "bill" is really $28.11, makes more sense.

Fi definitely seems goat if it works for you phonewise and you don't use a lot of data.

FI is goat if you travel alot or your country has terrible options.
In france you can pretty much have 50giga internet unlimited call/sms for less than 5$/month if you are a bit savy with minimum effort.

Damn I need to relook at Fi. I got the Sim card when I got my pixel but stuck with Verizon instead.

I use 2-2.5GB/month. Would be a lot less if my workplace had wifi, which may change soon and may make Fi worth it.

Fi confirmed GOAT for anyone that travels internationally.

My bill was $15.75.

The reason Fi users have a lower bill this month is because Google switched from pre-paid data to post-paid data.

Previously, you pre-paid for X GB, then were credited back $0.01/MB for what you didn't use, or charged $0.01/MB over what your plan was. Now it will be more streamlined to simply charge $0.01/MB for what was used rather than dealing with credits for unused data.

If you want to stick with Verizon cell coverage, you can look at www.redpocketmobile.com

You can find their plans on ebay and amazon and they support all four major cell carriers. I use the $60/year ($5/month) ebay plan on Verizon with my kids phones.

Your use case was definitely the most convincing.

My Note 5 has an issue with showing pictures and videos in the right orientation. I have a video (or picture) shot in landscape, but when I hold the phone in landscape to watch it, it flips to portrait, and vise versa. I installed the app Adapative Rotation Lock, it has a bucnh of options (Landscape, Reverse Portrait, Adaptivr Lock, etc etc) - it will fix some videos, but then mess up other videos. This only started happening a few months ago after having the phone for 2 years. Very annoying. Any ideas?

Oh so you're the other M9 owner.
My S7's battery has flipped out to the point where I'm back to the M9 as a daily driver, cracked screen and all.

As is customary there are no good sales when I need them this week. I swear the G6 & S8 were $200 off unlocked @Best Buy in the Summer.
Why is the Pixel so expensive and no headphone jack, wtf?
Maybe the Moto X would suit me well enough.

I dunno wtf happened to the S7, tried a zillion google searches, help forums, soft resets, factory reset; was a great phone otherwise.
