Not really sure how the conversation turned towards this, but tonight at a live game, the topic of how superior men are vs. women when it comes to athletics came up. The debate quickly turned towards how well a very good women's team would do when put up against a random, average high school team.

So anyway, one guy in the game finally says "I would bet $1,000,000 that the 2009 UConn women that went 39-0 couldn't beat our local high school boys team. In fact, they may not score a point."

The crazy part is, I think he's serious, right down to the "not scoring a point" part. Obviously, that is ridiculous, but it got me to wondering...against a random U.S. high school boy's basketball team, if the 2009 UConn women played them 100 times, how many games would the boys win?

For the sake of argument, assume they play on the boy's court, with the boy's ball (insert joke here). I say UConn wins 100% and it's not close. I also say that as a general rule, men are far superior athletically to women, but the difference between elite college women, and random high school boys is too big.

OOT, your thoughts?

this thread is stupid, because its been done a million times, and becase its also in the wrong forum

but mostly because anyone who thinks the uconn womens team wins has never played competitive basketball, because they would get slaughered and it wouldnt even be a contest.

Against a random american hs boys team, I'd say UCONN women win 3-5 times out of 100. And that is only because there are probably a bunch truly terrible and small HS Boys teams.

Against a top 1000 HS Boy's team they would win 0.

i think they would beat a couple of hikeschool boys but any pretty good boys team with size will dominate

The Poll options are terrible. Given the options I would vote 100 just because the gap between 50+ and 100 is so big. As I said I think they win a couple games just because there are some atrocious boys teams. Think of a hs with 60 boys in some rural town who field a team of 5'9" losers.

I can't vote 100 because UCONN may luckbox a game or two by jacking up a bunch of threes, but this isn't going to be close.

You don't need to get that extreme.

lol @ these responses, the AVERAGE HS team is not as good as it's made out to be here.

I would love for there to be a way to set this up...obviously it's never going to happen.

I'm about the last person on Earth to defend women's athletics. They're slower, clumsier, and just overall not as good as their male counterparts. That being said, I just have to believe that the absolute best women's team in the country isn't going to lose a game to a RANDOM boy's high school team. I've seen a bunch of bad boy's high school games, and I've watched a few women's NCAA title games. Guess I'm just in the minority.

The population in my town is 12-15k, HS population of about 500 total. We had a few good athletes on our BBall team but for the most part they were very mediocre with no big men in whatever mediocre division they were in. I think a lot of you overrate most high school basketball teams.

That qualifier is important.

there are so many awful hs teams that hey would beat quite a few. they would stand no chance against any reasonably competitive team.

henrix,
I think you're argument would be more compelling if you explained how the women's good fundamentals make up for their inability to dunk.

I think dunking is a very small part of your average high school basketball game

This.

"Random average team" is way too vague a statement.

I pretty much always go with the men on these because people underestimate the difference.

In this case though, I actually think UConn would be a favorite.

The reason for that is that most high schools are small. If it was a random draw where every high school in the country had an even chance then if they drew 100 schools they will play a lot of teams from small towns where there are a few hundred kids in the high school. I'm no expert in high school athletics, but I went to a school with 400-500 kids and our basketball team my senior year had no big players, biggest guy was like 6'2'', and no really good players. I don't think a single player went on to play even community college basketball, though I suspect a couple could have. I think that team gets destroyed by the UConn women, although there are probably a couple players that would give them problems.

Just pulling numbers completely out of my ass, I think in 100 random schools there would be 20-25 where UConn would dominate and 10-15 that would be massive favorites over the ladies. There'd be a fair number of blowouts in the middle, but I think on either end of the spectrum there are quite a few schools where UConn versus them would be better than 99:1 favorite or dog.

On the other hand, if every high school student in the country got an entry for their school for the random draw, then I think the high school boys would be a favorite.

They'd beat some division 4 teams from small towns with no players over 6'3, probably. But, virtually 0 chance against a large high school with a roster that has real size. UConn's center (Tina Charles) is 6'4 FFS. The six women who played the most minutes are: 6'4, 6'0, 5'7, 5'10, 5'10, 5'10. Probably nearly every division 1 high school team would slaughter them.
