Thinking in Bets by Annie Duke

Annie Duke has a new Book in 2018.

It is not a poker book but draws on examples from poker.

"Annie Duke, a former World Series of Poker champion turned business consultant, draws on examples from business, sports, politics, and (of course) poker to share tools anyone can use to embrace uncertainty and make better decisions."

It was recommended to me on Audible. I was surprised not to find at least one thread on it.

Needless to say, Ms. Duke does not have a very good reputation around here, but if it weren't written by her by just listening to the sample, I would have probably pulled the trigger on it. I read a ton, so it's not unusual for me to grab something that looks interesting even if it ends up sucking.

Has anyone read this book?

Does she have any credibility to write this type of book after all the fails she has been involved with?

Re: Thinking in Bets by Annie Duke

Interesting book.. I am always open to new ideas on how to improve our ability to make decisions so I may just read this.

I think Annie does have credibility for this book - like her or not, she has achieved success at the highest levels of poker. She is known to be a very deep thinker in both poker and life - yeah, I'd read the book.

I notice that she is now branching off to business consulting. In my opinion, I am not sure if she is credible for that. I don't know how much business experience she actually has with respect to starting and building companies or management leadership.

Sounds like you work for her PR company. You must not realize that just about every company that she has worked for/with has gone out of business, primarily due to mis-management, with her actions contributing to the demise.

It's interesting because if it wasn't for me knowing more about her from poker I probably would've bought the book already.

I'm also curious Mason has any thoughts on somebody with a less than stellar track record writes a book how does that factor in a publisher. This potentially could be a decent book but the author does have a significant credibility issue.

Hi Badger:

Poker World Magazine, am organizatio I was briefly involved with, in the mid 1990s also went bankrupt under her leadership. This is something that most here don’t know about.

As from a publisher’s prospective, it’s my experience that most publishers don’t care much about ethics. At least this seems common in the poker/gambling field. So if the book has some sales potential finding a publisher shouldn’t be difficult.

As far as I know, Duke headed up two companies, Poker World and Epic Poker League (which I think had a different company name) that both went bankrupt. If this information was on the back cover I wonder how well her new book would sell. Also, just to set the record straight, I have not read this book so can’t comment directly on it.

Best wishes,
Mason

Re: Thinking in Bets by Annie Duke

I just read the intro and the concepts seem sound. Basically, she starts with the fact that people in general evaluate the quality of decisions based on the end result which as we know in poker is not always a valid approach when evaluating the quality of our decision making abilities. She is basically applying the concept of expectation in poker to real world decisions.

I've only browsed thru it.

We poker players know the importance of being non-results oriented but instead focusing on the EV of a decision to determine its soundness. The business world and other worlds don't think this way. She is trying to teach them how to think like poker decision makers.

Actually, we poker players also take into account the variance that's associated with any bets we make. For instance, especially when an overlay occurs, you can buy lottery tickets with positive expectation, but given how large the associated variance (or standard deviation) is that accompanies this bet, you should never do it unless you're purchasing the tickets for fun.

Best wishes,
Mason

I doubt that op was talking about her poker ability.

That might have been the case in about 1995. According to Hendon Mob, Duke hasn't cashed in a single poker tournament since a $200 charity event in 2011.
