Many of the old school guys have probably read the basics like Theory of Poker, Supersystem, Caro's Book of Tells, etc.. when they first started and over time, they just built up their game from playing and talking about hands with others.
Many of the pros who have written books haven't read many books themselves. They just decided to put their thoughts into print.
