I read this book a few years back when I was just learning. It is the worst poker book ever written. I feel like Phil owes me money for reading it.

no reason to get it unless you're gonna sell it for 50 cents at a garage sale. you can read SS2 for free and its by far better in every category. Hellmuth's hold'em advice will no doubt cost you lots of money.

This is not a poker book, and I actually like Phil. The most use I got out of it was a place to put my drink while sitting on the couch, I didnt want that glass on my furniture ya know!

That's not too far from the truth. It could possibly take you years to unlearn all the crap in that book.

I bought it when I first started to take poker seriously. If you are really new, you might find some value in it. The biggest thing I took from it was identification of playing styles, but even as a newer player when I read it, I could tell I needed something more advanced.

I gave my copy to someone else a long time ago, but from what I remember, the limit section wasn't very good. Also, I didn't have any interest in Omaha 8OB at the time and didn't know any better, but was told that section was awful.

It was the first poker book I ever read. I thought it was the nuts when I was just getting serious about NLHE, but that was a time when I though PH was also the nuts. If you are brand new to poker, it's worth your time. Otherwise, don't bother.

This was also the first book I ever read. It makes you play really, really tight which is good if you are starting off. If you are just starting at poker it's not a bad book to read, but there are a lot of better options out there.

its not a good book, even for a total beginner.

supersystem is a better book for a total beginner because I feel it recommends more aggressive play and less folding anything but premiums. and I think his book is geared toward tournament play.

Brilliant post.

I'm not a Phil hater but this was the first poker book I purchased. Actually my wife bought it as a gift years ago because she recognized the name and wanted to get me a poker book.

I read about 1/3 of it and put it down for good. Now it's in my basement. From what I recall the book is primarily an autobiography of different hands Phil played and how awesome he played them. It's horribly self-absorbed and an absolute waste of time. Sure it's free but it's not going to teach you anything relavant in today's games. Read one of the others mentioned in this thread.

It was the first book I bought (beat) and I spent the next year of my poker career playing on Absolute (double beat) labeling players as mouse, jackal, elephant, lion or eagle. It actually helped me take notes/label players so it sort of helped, but not nearly as much as Lee Jones did.

Even though the PLO8 section is very small it is some of the only printed material on the game and it's good enough to get a beginner started. It's were I started with plo8 and that's my best game.

This.

Back when I wanted to start playing HORSE I picked up "Play Poker Like the Pros" to learn the structures and basic concepts of the various games. I wouldn't use it as primary studying material, but for $4 shipped off Amazon, it's a cheap introduction to unfamiliar forms of poker.

When you say it's the worst book ever written, what makes you feels this way? (And I assume it's especially bad for the learning player since that was your situation at the time of reading).

Most of the book deals with full-ring Limit Hold Em and basically lays out an incredibly tight-passive strategy that may do well enough at the micros but will get you slaughtered at anything above .50/1.

I agree in that it is the worst book I've ever read... Nothing about it is interesting or helpful to anyone who understands the rules and is playing for money online.

Here is the entire book -

Spoiler:
BE A SUPER NIT

the end. Just no reason for anyone to waste money on this book if you have access to online...

Ok first I can name 2 books that are better which is Lee Jones and Dan Harrington for 1-2 no limit cash games. The good thing about Helmuths is it teaches u extreme patience which is what most players do not have for low limit. It also shows u how to categorize players which is extremely useful in low limit. I say if its free read it. I read it in a week and it helped me alot even tho he does brag about how he played certain hands in it alot. Low limit is very boring, but if u have enuf patience, and know how to take bad beats, it can be beat.

As I remember it his description of play seemed incomplete and ended up messing with my game. He was overly focused on opening hands (top fing 10 hands) when he really should have focused on playing position in relation to an opening hand.

The eagle, rat, jackal lion thing was him and his ego whining about other styles of play and proclaiming himself the best. It's good to be confident but man the reader is left questioning the writer’s motives. It was very self indulgent.
