Hey, I'll give you some background information about my poker experiences:

Been playing poker online since early 2010.

2010: Ring games 0.05/0.10
-Had never read any books, no advice, lost my first $50 after getting it up to $120.
-Deposited another $50 and lost it

2011:
-Lived in a dormitory with an extremely good poker player room mate
-Played poker online for 5-8 hours a day with coaching from room mate.
-Turned $50 deposit into $800 in about a week or 2.
-Turned the $800 into $1,900 after winning a $3.30 tournament on PokerStars.
-Continued to play online, mainly 0.25/0.50 and 0.50/1 HU, as well as $7-$15 Multi-table SNG and HU SNG on PS.
-Cashed out final amount of just under USD$3k, because I was moving to the US for university.

Dilemma:
Obviously I can't play online in the US, and I want to start playing $1/$2 or higher at Casinos in Australia and the UK when i'm there (summer etc). However i've never really played ring games, sticking to SNG/HU/Tournaments as they were more profitable for me.

I'm fairly confident that even without ever reading a poker book, I know a lot to know about the game, but not everything. I picked up a few tips from reading a small chunk of Cole South's book when i was at my friend's apartment, and this led me to think that I could really benefit from reading books. I want to know what book I should purchase to ensure that I am a profitable player at $1/$2 or $2/$5 live. Any tips are appreciated.

Wait for Matthew Janda's book (Applications of No-Limit Hold'em) to come out to improve your overall hand range thinking or buy Ed Miller's last two books (How to read hands at No-Limit Hold'em and Playing the Player) written mainly for live small stakes players.

There's also Reading Poker Tells by Zachary Elwood.. You'll find threads for all of them. Good Luck.

You can play online for money in the US on some sites, but getting money on and off will be a little more difficult than where you were coming from, though so see the Internet Poker subsection for sites you can play on.

+1

I will add Bart Hanson stuffs :
- His live cash game podcast at http://www.seatopenpoker.net/ ;
- His live cash game video training at http://www.pokernetcast.com/poker-vi...rategy-videos/ .

I prefer the videos (which are excellent) since I'm not an english native and it's sometimes difficult to follow the podcast after half an hour since I'm tired of english language .

Good luck with the showdown monkeys

I support this recommendation. Spend the $1000 needed to buy the ebook while enriching some crook. Somewhere in the book they discuss turning made hands into bluffs. I strongly advise using these moves against live 1/2 players (80%+ of whom are even bigger donks than me). The chapter on levelling war is a must too! Hurry, it's a bargain at $1000! (60% off!)

These are the only books you need for live 200 and 500NL -

"Sit Down, Shut Up and Value Bet"
"How to Make Money Without Ever Bluffing or Calling a 3-bet"

(I should totally write these and make mirrions)

I'd write them but they'd never sell; the titles give away everything you need to know
