very simple answer - volume. Overseas shipping rates tend to vary based on the shippers overall volume, a high volume shipper can use third party middle-men to cross the continents, and in turn reduce the costs greatly.
Well, that was my guess but just wanted a confirmation for that. Thanks for that.

What's funny is that I constantly order tea from one U.S. online tea shop and they absorb the shipping cost. My credit card was charged 60 dollars and on the box was stamp that said the shipping cost 39.90 dollars. Amazing.

Not that I'm complaining about the shipping cost (I found it to be fair and a non-issue), but it's not "out of 2+2's control" at all. They can charge as little or as much as they want, they can even completely absorb the cost if they like.

1) We're not arguing over the pennies. We're arguing over the unorthodox business practice of billing months in advance, and over the logic given for doing so.

2) Let's take your logic above a step further. Let's say the postman comes to your door with your Harrington book delivery and says "here's your book, just give me a fifty cent tip and I'll give it to you." You protest that a tip is unnecessary as the postage has already been paid, and he replies "This is really amazing we have arguments over pennies. Yes I understand the principal but gentlemen we are talking pennies for a WORLD CLASS product."

I was a little surprised also when I ordered the book, but look what he's doing, he gave a discount and is working to get the books out asap when they get in. I'm sure he's going to be humpping the day they arive and not clearing payments will help get the books out.

My copy of SSHE has nearly disintegrated. I have an extra one that I was going to give away, but thankfully I still have it.

You're paying $70 for priceless material, I mean seriously, how much time do you spend at the tables to win $70? Exactly, not much.
And if you never get to the point that you win $70, you seriously need these books to improve, investment!

This is a question for Mason. I'll be in Vegas in early March returning home on the 5th. How quickly do you get the books to the Borders store at McCarran?

I have no idea. We ship to different Borders' warehouses. Then they ship to their stores.

Best wishes,
Mason

1) I think it's completely ethical. If they stored our cc info I think that would be unethical.

2) This doesn't make any sense. Lots of places charge for pre-orders on stuff and they don't owe you interest. Best Buy charges your cc for orders on things that aren't even in stock yet.

You can always wait longer to pre-order/order the book so you're whopping $80 isn't on hold for so long. It's not like the book is thousands of dollars, in which case having your money tied up would be a hassle. If you want interest on money put it in a bank or something. It's ridiculous that people even have the expectation that a book publisher owes them money for charging them right away for a book pre-order. I wasn't surprised at all when they charged my cc. I even checked my statement right away to make sure the order went through.

On a lighter note, I can't wait to get the books. March is oh so close. =)

I think the best thing to do is for Mike to inform everyone who preorders that their card is charged upon ordering.
And or the ones interested can order a week before the announced release.
Again I am a little surprised we are having this discussion spread over three pages about pennies being charged interest to ones account yet still not having the material. Yes I understand on principal but lets loosen up here.
The material being offered should pay back the interest a thousand fold your first pot you take down.

Just pre-ordered the 2 books at Amazon.
I wanted to buy them at 2+2 store cause I guess I can thank 2+2 for most of my earnings, but the shipping was just a tad to extreme.

Agreed, mucked4u. I think I will read the books in a day or two, and I haven't done that with a book in a very long time. My cash game needs some serious help.

What if he takes the order and then the customer goes broke between now and when he ships? Basically a lost order. If you dont want your money tied up, then dont preorder months in advance. You know you are getting a copy, so just order a day or two before it comes out.

That's about all there is to it, and the same for people who have a problem with the cost.

There are other similar problems all through the process, especially with binding. Anyway, we're not going to find out.
I may be nearly alone, but for future editions I'd be in favor of a slight reduction in font size, and omission of the gratuitous pictures of cards that seem to be a 2p2 staple. That would substantially reduce the page count; losing the pictures would go a long way on its own. Go ahead and charge just as much for the book, I don't care and will still buy it -- just kill fewer trees while taking up less space on my shelves, with a product that doesn't look like it's intended for fifth graders.

I was also surprised to be charged right away. I work as a consultant, often setting up ecommerce systems, and all of them that take preorders don't charge until the product actually ships. Honestly I thought there was some sort of law or something (yeah I know thats probably stupid), or that it was easier in case of delays, etc.

Anyway I really don't care either way, but it is pretty unusual in my experience at least. I certainly don't think its a sign of unethical practices.

Not here. Some of us don't need more eyestrain.

Yeah, but I can't win 70$ at poker to buy them. If only there was a book that would tell me how to do that.

My order is in. Ordered and requested to ship to a friend in Hong Kong as I'm moving there next month. Could've ordered from amazon.ca to save but wanted to support the little guy and also get it sooner.

Mike, priority is the bestest/fastest international shipping option right?

Priority is pretty good (1-3 weeks in transit depending on customs delays) but Express Guaranteed is fastest. We use Fed-Ex for that and when possible rebate/refund some of the shipping fees when they are lower than the US Postal Service rates that are quoted.
