Found Some Old 2+2 Titles In A Local Book Box. Useful? or Relics? Found Some Old 2+2 Titles In A Local Book Box. Useful? or Relics?

I found some old 2=2 titles in the neighborhood book exchange box. They are:

"Poker Essays" by Mason Malmuth, first edition paperback copyright 1991,

"High-Low-Split Poker (Seven Card Stud and Omaha 8-Or-Better") by Ray Zee, first edition paperback copyright 1992, and

"Harrington on Holdem 1 and 2," 2009 edition.

There was also a copy of "Omaha Holdem Poker (New Expanded Edition)" by Bob Ciaffone, a 1990 title that appears to have been self published.

I was never much for poker books, although many years ago when I was getting involved in online poker I read "SuperSystem," "Harrington on Holdem," and a couple of Cloutier-McEvoy titles, all courtesy of the local public library.

I wonder if anyone thinks these titles retain any utility after as much as 30 years.

I haven't really looked at any of them yet, but I suspect that the Ray Zee title might still be somewhat relevant, and that there may be a few nuggets of wisdom in Mr. Malmuth's collection of essays. I suspect that the least useful of all would be Harrington on Holdem, despite being the most recent title by almost 20 years.

What do you think?

Ray Zee´s book is the Bible for these games and I am sure there will be, as you say, some nuggets of wisdom in Mason Malmuth´s book.

Omaha Poker is probably useless. HOH 1/2 probably okay for a beginners to tournys, but not for advanced players. High Low Split poker is a great introduction to hi/lo games. Those concepts are probably enough to at least breakeven, if not win in most low stakes hi/lo games.

Poker Essays is probably the most useful, imo. I think that whole collection (Poker Essays 1,2,3), while having some outdated parts, is still pretty useful for general poker wisdom. I find them highly underrated and I had a handful of aha moments when I read them early in my career. It also gives you a window into alternate games that you might not play. If you've been a professional for awhile, you've probably learned most of the lessons in those books, but it has lots of useful psychology, bankroll, rushes, evaluating structures and rake, playing your image, game selection, and whole loads of random tidbits that lots of strategy books/videos don't really talk about. The advice on specific hands and holdem strategies probably won't be great though. But again, I read them early in my career and it helped a decent amount, I'm not sure how I'd have felt if I read them like 6-10 years in my career.

Zee's book is excellent and still probably relevant. I had it on my night stand back in the early 2000s when I played alot of Stud. The games have not progressed that much since then (if you can find it spread). HoH was good back in the day, but the concepts are pretty dated now. I owned a copy of Ciaffone's 20 years ago and I didn't think it was worth the money then. You could probably use it to help level a coffee table though.
