I don't buy many poker books, but I picked this one up yesterday. For those who don't know, the book is by Gus Hansen. I am about ten pages in and enjoying myself thoroughly.

I was intrigued by this after hearing Gus on the 2+2 Pokercast. It's probably the next book I'll pick up as well.

Is this on any specific form of poker, or just general?

The basis of the book is the 2007 Aussie Millions that Hansen won so the book is on Tournament No Limit. After a hand was over, he would step away from the table and record his thoughts. Most of his hands are discussed. He eliminated some hands that he had no intention of playing and folded pre-flop.

I'm wondering if his reasoning involve a lot of mathematics in this book?

Based on his introduction and the actual pages I have read, I would say yes.

Does the book only go into hand by hand discussions by Gus or is there also sections about Gus views on poker theory and stratedgy? Just curious if it all hands like Phil Gordons second little book, or if it had a good mix of theory and hands.

Mine arrived this morning (UK), from High Stakes Bookstore.

If it is available in Europe before US, that's a nice change :-)

Highstakes usually try to get books as soon as possible from the publishers, so sometimes their prices are slightly higher to take into account their increased delivery costs...which is a tradeoff many readers are happy to make.

Amazon Germany just informed me this morning that the book is on its way.

Having finished this book now, I found it a fascinating read. Gus plays quite differently from the conventionally accepted style. In particular, he defends his blinds a hell of a lot, and also bets into the raiser very frequently. His continuation bet frequency is high ; at one point he talks about keeping it down to "only 80%" for metagame reasons !

It's very interesting how you can approach this book in two completely different ways. One : how to play like Gus. As above, pretty much. I also noted while working through it that Gus practically never makes the big bluff. Semi-bluffs, the odd double barrel, but no total air all-ins. Gus confirms this in his afterword.

Two : how to play against Gus. Reading this book reinforced my own idea of how to play against small-ballers like Gus, Hellmuth, Negreanu, etc. Four words : Re. Raise. Pre. Flop. Three things these guys are trying to achieve with frequent small opens : gain the initiative ; keep the pot relatively small pre-flop ; narrow opponent's range according to whether (and how) he calls or reraises. Deny them all of these by simply reraising with all your best 15-25% of hands (depending on position) and folding the rest. And make it a proper 3-bet, at least 3x. If they four-bet, or call and bet into you on the flop, do your best. If they call/check, auto-continuation bet.

Similarly if you open and one of these guys calls, I would tend to auto-continuation bet the flop, and check the turn where appropriate. Check-raising the turn OOP is a powerful weapon. If you keep your line as consistent and unexploitable as possible for as long as possible, it cuts down their ability to read your hand. I was surprised how often Gus simply checks and gives up when he misses (after calling pre-flop). In part he can do this because many opponents check behind and allow him to take it later.

In the end I found myself agreeing with some of the friends Gus quoted, saying why the hell would you give anyone all this information as to how you play. Approached in the right way, this book is basically a primer in how to play against Gus and similar opponents. Given this, if you're playing the WSOP this summer, I think it's a must read. Even like durrrr and westmenlo, etc, would find it worth $20 for a look inside Gus's head !

All in all, strongly recommended.

Bonified, I hope you get some kind of commission. Everybody needs to know what makes a LAG tick, if for no other reason then to protect your chips/bankroll.

Im half way through it and it is just as excellent as I expected. Very hands-on stuff, just real hands and how a LAG player like Gus sees different situations. He also explaines how he approached different stages of the tournament. What is also important is how he takes into account differences between his opponents and differences in chip stacks. His use of math is also interesting, he explains how he saw his chances and pot odds in different situations.

All in all I would say that its an absolute must for those who want to improve their tournament poker skills. I have read so many books written with a theoretical/general approach, this one is one of a kind. I would say that this one and Michael Craig's 'The Professor, the Banker and the Suicide King' are the best poker books I have ever read (these two are of course very different, since the latter is not on poker strategy). Oh and of course the Harringtons.

It might be tough to buy it IN Oz. I'd go the twoplustwostore.com route or Amazon.com.

You can always email Kensington Publishers to see if they'll be having anyone print it Australia (doubtul, but you never know). This would probably be the only way that it would become available at a smaller price.

Not quite sure what you're asking Montreal, but if it's what is the full name of the book, the title is 'Every Hand Revealed'.

It's usually cheaper to order from Amazon and pay the delivery costs, especially if you're ordering several things at once, but even for individual books if they're more expensive than paperbacks. Otherwise Abbey's in Sydney will order anything for you if you can tell them the publisher, and most bookstores will order anything that is carried by the distributor they use (you won't know whether that's the case until you ask them whether the book is in their database - if it is, their distributor can get it for them, if not, move on to the next store. Do this by phone unless you need the exercise. Some stores hook their web site up to their distributor database, as opposed to a separate database just used for their web site, which means you can just search their site, but I'm not sure which ones do this. Phone is more reliable).
