Doyle's Super System still works today? Doyle's Super System still works today?

Hi, glad to be here.

This video popped on my YouTube feed and made me think, is Brunson's Super System: Power Poker still relevant today? With the field being very loose-aggressive, etc.? I know that it's supposed to be the number one book on poker (unless my knowledge is outdated)...

Doyle is the original LAG the only problem today is people do not lead into you as much and just call with big hands a lot more often so it is harder to get people to fold when barreling.

Out of all the books it's probably the best, only one close to relevant other than maybe some super nerd stuff you'd find on 2+2. We are past the era of learning from books on a lot of things tho. Went to Autozone the other day and asked how much the Hayes (I think that's what they're called) mechanics books were. Person working there didn't even know meanwhile there was an entire rack behind them, then we got to talking about how you can watch a master mechanic on youtube for free. We laughed and I walked off realizing those days are over, I'll never have another mechanic's book for my cars.

You can put an entire chapter in 1-2 minutes of a youtube vid, much better way to relay info.

Books are way better for actually soaking in information and learning. YouTube videos are great if you’re just interested in figuring out how to do something really quick. I’m old school and prefer paper books over ebooks or videos. I like being able to quickly flip between pages and to easily go back and forth. Plus, it’s nice to get away from the screen sometimes. Added bonus of the mechanic book is you might experience a breakdown in an area with no cell service and you’ll have the book to reference if you keep it in your car.

To OP, it’s a classic book that has some foundational information in it. It’s not terribly relevant to today’s game but if you’re new to poker or just want to brush up on some basic concepts, it’s not bad at all.

The real question is did it ever work? I'd say no but it got people thinking about the game.

Lol, me too, so nostalgic, but for different reasons... I think I have never crushed like I crushed just after reading Super System. I recall playing on Paradise Poker 0.25/0.5 and finishing one night with a $1000+ stack and the day after $900ish. All the table was insulting me in the chat. Wow that was so great... I've never done it again since then.

To answer the OP question, Super System is indeed outdated and too simplistic to work today as it is. But still, I would say that Super System is "the soul of poker". I would still recommend it as a first read for any aspiring poker player because it gives the write mindset to start learning: agression, agression, agression.
No matter how many books I read after this one, I wouldn't be same player I am today if I hadn't read this one first.

i agree with almost every comment.

great great book.. but not that relevant to today. probably do alot of harm in fact..... but i think it will give you great insight as to how the LAG game began.

fyi, it was written for very deep stack poker (like 1000 bb) and with pretty passive (not sure loose or tight, probably both) opponents.

That is awesome! Paradise Poker was also where I started.....I remember playing there before they even offered NL! Then once it came, it was on!!

Glad someone was able to put that book to some use :P Well done.

the book tells you to be aggressive. that's pretty good advice.

does it tell you when to be aggressive?

Good book for your library but why would you base your play around older and not top notch info?
