I read both very long threads on each of these and am still not any further along on a decision (I can only afford one of these).

Can some generous person do a TL;DR comparison of the two. Clarke has a sample download on Amazon, but I don't believe Janda has a sample. Clarke starts off slowly, but then quickly gets into hard-core stuff (see especially the sample download of his followup "100 Hands" book).

But I have huge respect for Janda after his first book, so it's a difficult decision for me.

[by the way, I don't find any value in the reviews on Amazon]

Thanks.

If you're playing 5NL or 10NL or something like that, Clarke's book might be the better one to start with. If you're playing higher, Janda's book might be more useful, but then you'd presumably be able to afford both.
