Who is Old Man Coffee? Who is Old Man Coffee?

Is this just your typical 70+ year old guy who is a NIT and doesn't talk to anybody? Keep hearing this phrase and I just don't ask what it means until now.

Typical old guy at the casino. Has a lot of tendencies like limping AK, flatting with KK to make sure there is no Ace on the flop, and stacking off with overpairs. Doesn't bluff much if ever. Often grumpy but not necessarily.

OMC is a regular that plays during the day. He's retired and poker is a way to pass the time. He's there to socialize with the other people and staff in the room. If you have your hoodie up and ear buds in, he'll seem grumpy to you.

The mistake most players make against him is they assume he's a big time loser in the game. He's not likely to be a big winner, but he's been around poker for years. The reason is that he learned that having the best hand preflop means you'll often win that pot. So he plays much tighter than the people around him. He's seen lots of young players show up at the room spouting off about why the latest buzz word (GTO anyone?) is making them a ton of money, then disappear after 4-5 months broke.

And remember, not all older players are OMC's. Your typical OMC plays for the social aspects, is there to lose the minimum over time, and plays a tight, static strategy. I play with several guys in their 60's who play aggressive, bluff a lot, and are constantly working on their games.

although the term does derive from a tight retiree sitting at the table wearing a baseball cap, drinking coffee and sometimes reading a newspaper during the morning to early afternoon hours, it could be any time of day either with or without the cap, paper and coffee.

It's a tight older player who folds everything but top premium hands and when he's in the pot (especially when he stays in) watch out, because he will have the nuts. They often overbet the pot to protect their hand (especially if there's a flush draw on the board while they hold a set). They bet to end hands rather then milk people, because they're always scared of being outdrawn, even if there aren't many draws.

Just one thing to add: lots of them are habitual promo chasers. In part because they "want to take the casinos money".

While many are certainly the weaker stereotype versions of OMC, assuming they are all like that is a very swift way to losing your stack. A few orbits of obsevation of these folks could save you some financial stress.

Isn't it the opposite? If you assume every old guy is a tight nit, you might overfold because you give them too much credit for big hands.

What I meant was that some of the guys who look like the OMC stereotypes could be decent TAG types with the abiity to make moves from time to time. I only think you should pay some attention before lumping them into one bag to your possible regret.

i fit partly maybe mostly into that mold. but i seem to break many of those that stereotype the old gents. and that style of play if done properly does get the money brother.

"I never raise big slick before the flop, because it never hits when you raise."

I see a lot of OMC raise preflop once every 5 hours and then jam $100 into a $35 pot because they don't want their Aces to get cracked.

Based on the amount of calls they get in lots of 1/2 games, that's not even a bad strategy.

You would assume everybody knows they have exactly AA/KK but there always seems to be somebody to call off with TP (or even worse)

I agree 100%. Just describing what I see OMCs do a lot of the time. I generally try to play as many hands against these guys as possible.

problem is you dont have the best hand against them most times and they dont let you get odds to draw out. so it isnt easy to win much off them. just very easy not to lose money to them.

Old Man Coffee is the guy with the hookup to the best private game out of anyone at the table. He's also the only kind of friend you want to have at the table because he's such a gigantic nit that you can avoid hands with him and be super +EV about doing it too. Be friendly to old man coffee.

Maybe the best private game that runs between 9AM - 4PM. At the time most private games run, OMC has fallen asleep on the couch during his favorite Columbo episode.

No, you're missing the point. Old Man Coffee is at the casino when it opens because the private game doesn't start until 4PM.

Sorry, I still don't get it. The private game starts in the evening and doesn't take place at the casino anyway, so what exactly is OMCs connection to it?

They might have a hookup for a game at a fraternal organization like Knights of Columbus but that's about it.

Lol, I actually got invited to a Knights of Columbus home game last year because I ran for their team at a charity run. Lets just say those people were not better at playing poker than at running a 5K.
