Equity in business refers to how much of the asset you own.
In poker, it refers to how much of a pot you 'own' based on the probability that you will win the hand, and that the pot does not change. I think it is a somewhat inaccurate and misleading term. I also find it to be a simplistic number and not always useful number
I much prefer using EV, which can include different equities for different outcomes and different pot values. EV is much better at considering multiple branches of the outcome tree, where equity can only consider two (you win or you lose).
