In general, don't come asking for advice and then get defensive/combative when your playing style gets criticized.

If you are a loose/passive player preflop and overly aggressive postflop, you get the orange tag from me, the type of player I most want to play against. The "donkey" tag if you will.

These players don't get proper value preflop with strong hands and then dont know how to value their hand postflop. Tending to put too money in with weaker hands. These are the types of fish that lose their money the fastest.

First off, welcome to 2+2. I am the most active Beginners Questions moderators but several others breeze through here regularly.

2+2 has evolved from the early 2000's where the quality of information was (imo) astounding. I benefited from many of those early posts and became a competent player. I no longer play except an occasional foray to Vegas.

Black Friday (2011), when the DOJ shut down all online play for the USA, was a turning point here. Many people simply quit. Some moved off the computer into live action in casinos. 2+2 became a smaller draw for the quality posters because they could make WAY more money teaching than playing..... thus the result being online "training sites" for a fee. Some good posters remain (one or two trolls remain as well). The trick really is to find the better ones and absorb what they are telling you. (Separate the wheat from the chaff so to speak)

You have some really good responses to this post from some of the best of 2+2. THE problem you raise is.... you are basically asking How SHOULD I Play Poker? It is an impossible task to answer such a broad question.

My advice to you is to read a ton of threads in BQ and the strategy forum of your preferred game (maybe No Limit HE>Micro-Small Full Ring HERE). Then start posting specific hands that you played that you need help with. You'll get a feel for how 2+2 "works" and will develop a list of your trusted posters that to YOU, post good advice.

I can tell you it really took about three years of reading everything on 2+2 starting in 2005 before I felt I had a better grasp of poker. I've played over 2 million hands online and in today's game, I would be The Mark on the felt. My 2011 game is nowhere good enough to compete at the mid-levels where I was a regular back then. I think 2NL would be a challenge for me.

Why would you post a thread in BQ and then argue against almost every single reply you get?

Do you think that's a good way to solicit advice from anonymous people you're asking for help on the internet?

Your strategy is a fine way to make money vs weak players, but there are massive fundamental holes that anyone decent will pick up on and exploit. Playing a simple, abc strategy like you've outlined might be enough for a hobby player to not get crushed, but if you ever want to surpass that level it's just not a good enough way to play. A strategy like that would struggle to beat even 25nl online on most sites.

This.

If you get snippy when people are helping you, it's going to be hard to keep control when people are taking money off you.

And if you get defensive about your style instead of learning from mistakes, you will be very popular at the tables

OK guys, I would think the new poster gets what you all are saying. Move on.

Your strat will work at the lowest levels of live poker (and perhaps some online - mostly free money sites though), but you won't succeed as you move up. If you are content with grinding 1/2 and 1/3 live and making a couple BB/hr., then you do you. If you want to move up to 2/5 or 5/T+, you're going to have to get better.

If you don't think bluffing is a successful strategy (I used to agree years ago when I was a free donkament player), you are still very early in your learning experience.

I'd call your playing style a beginner's style. It is a safe strategy for new players who don't have a firm grasp of the game yet. (No beginner will have a firm grasp of the game, and frankly most veterans know less than they think.) It's what most winning players do when they start out, actually.

I think he is asking 'how do I know when to call a big raise before preflop' or 'how do I know when to raise myself'
Several things come into play. Your opponents, how much is the raise, what do you have, your streak.
Ask yourself, am I running hot, warm or cold. You'll find your calling and raising answers then

Because everyone knows that how you've been running will have an impact on what cards come out.

You're basing your strategy solely based on what cards you hold and making a hand with those cards.

You win at poker by learning how to determine what your opponents' cards are and what hands they might make, as well as how they interpret your action.

You're at 0th level thinking, which is standard for a beginner. Time to start trying to figure out what the opposition is holding.

Aggressive post flop
-Walks into a lot of made hand (since your passive prflop play may have induced a limpede)
-Ends up stacking you off when you have a lot of good but not great hands (like bottom two pair, or the low flushes)
-Ends up with you being taken to valuetown when you are chasing your draws

As mentioned, this is a very newbie-ish style of play, and is typically countered by experienced players widening their value range, reducing their bluff range, and value betting you wide all four streets.

You will occasionally run good and build up a stack. But if you play this style and don't leave immediately after catching a pot, you will get ground to dust

Edit: It should be worth noting that there are successful pros who play a style similar to this, but they can do it because they are incredible post flop flop players.
This is the best reply so far and so true.

There are entire books and sites with 100's of videos on poker strategy, there's no way to explain a strategy in a few simple forum posts.

A lot of the questions you've been asking are pretty vague. You might get better responses if with more detailed/specific questions.
