I'm a beginner halfway through Jonathan Little's book Small Stakes Poker Cash Games. It's a short read, I'm just trying to get some fundamentals down so I start putting hands in and get a feel for the game. What should I know before picking up Applications?

If you play cash games, you might be better served by reading 'The Grinders Manual' before trying Janda's books. I think you'd actually be better served by Janda's second book than the first, tbh. 'Applications' is overly complicated and contains some math stuff that isn't really very useful.

Funny you should mention that book, I did some research and I was going to read that one next.

For now I'd like to save the heavy reading until I've put a lot of hands in and got a feel for the game. But to get started, I want something that will teach me the basics so I can start playing.

Since I want to focus on cash with the intention of playing live once I get the hang of the game, how would this action plan sound to you:
- Read Grinder's Manual
- Put in ~100k hands, analyze hand history
- Continue to play while starting to read Janda's second book, then first

Sounds like a decent plan. Good luck!

I agree with ArtyMcFly. After you digest The Grinders Manual, I recommend taking a look at "100 Hands: 100 Detailed Solutions to 100 6-Max Cash Problems". Same author, Peter Clarke, as TGM. You can preview 100 Hands using Kindle.

Best of luck!

Yes it does, but it's one of a kind and worth taking a look at. If you plan to play some none NLz on Ignition, you can use a card catcher for ring games for stats. Also some HUDs don't require it and just work stand alone. Not only that it's good to diversify, play multiple sites and pick and choose your games.

Being a beginner you should follow up with this book. Its decent and gets you thinking like a real poker player. Plus you kill two birds with one stone (cash & MTT) I assume you talking about the short version of cash games JL has written.

The poster has stated he is a beginner. I feel it makes sense to learn to walk before running. logic says he will start at 1 - 2 nl live. The game is much different then a standard 2 - 5 game etc. Therefore learn the techniques necessary to beat the low limit game.
Janda etc are good books but not a good entry level foundation. If your talking going intermediate level then go for Janda etc. Grounding yourself in JL`s ssnl books will anchor the beginner. Also throw in the 3 book series on Donkey Poker.

Does “The Grinders Manual” translate to a full-ring live game? I know it states that it’s geared towards 6max online, but as a beginner 1-2 and 2-5 live player, would it be very helpful?
