Let me preface the situation with the following background information:

1. At the company I work for, we are allowed to barter, trade, sell, or donate PTO freely

2. I have a very good relationship with the co-worker involved

3. He has plenty of excess PTO he won't use this year

With that being said, I am considering swapping a percent of my action in a $1,100 live MTT in a few weeks. He has expressed interested in giving me 2 days PTO for a percent of my action and told me to come up with a fair number to propose to him. FWIW, day 1 is on the weekend, day 2 (if I make it) would be on a Monday, and day 3 (final table only) is on a Tuesday so it's possible I could need 1-2 days just to play the tournament alone.

I am curious what you guys think is fair? I am playing the tournament regardless and would like a few extra PTO days to extend my holiday vacations at the end of the year, but I want to make sure the deal is fair. Also, do you think there should be any bonus/incentive if I make final table regardless of whatever % we agree on?

Interested to hear thoughts on this.

Thanks,

Jeff

That’s obviously highly dependent on the kind of job you do. If you’re in the fast food industry, a full day might be worth less than 100 bucks. If you’re in consulting, a day might be worth over $1k.

The fact that you might need PTO to play the event shouldn’t matter at all if you’re going to play the event anyway.

Let's just say I have a good corporate job in the $100k - $150k range. It's hard for me to put a dollar value on a day of vacation because I get paid regardless whether I work a regular day or am on a day of PTO. So it really comes down to how much do I think "having to go into the office" for the day is worth.

Remember if I bust on day 1, then I won't have to use any PTO to play on Monday/Tuesday and I'd get an extra 2 days to use around Christmas with my family.

If you're playing the tourney regardless then you'll potentially use 2 days of your pto anyway...meaning if you make the deal for 2 days of pto with him and ft, you'll still have 2 additional days of pto than you otherwise would.

How much your pto is worth is pretty dependent on both your salary and your personal views. If your company pays you for unused pto at the end of whatever period, you can just take that dollar value and apply it. However, I don't think the community will be able to come up with some concrete "fair" or "unfair" suggestions as that's pretty dependent on some individual variables.

I don't think it's particularly unfair to have final table incentives, but I also don't think it's a necessary part of a fair deal. After all, if you make the ft you earn more money too and that's an incentive in itself.

If you make $50/hr then a day of pto would be roughly $400. If you think you're a favorite in the tourney, you might want to charge a slight markup, so something like 1 day of pto for like 33% of your action seems reasonable to me offhand.
