i usually start shoving when im 10BB deep. after reading touanment poker for advanced players it talks about waiting for hands when your 1bb deep.

i'm rarely if ever down to 1bb. should i be waiting for a hand more rather than getting it all in with a 10bb stack?

If you mean any two cards? No, I don't shove any two cards from any position 10bb deep. I shove selectively based on my stack size as the primary concern, the players behind me as secondary concern, and the players to my right as a last consideration.

Sometimes this means shoving often with <17bb.

Sometimes this means folding AJo in the cutoff with 11bb because of the short stack on the button and the huge stack in the small blind playing a high % of hands.

10bb is an arbitrary stack size to decide "That's when I start shoving". You should just be looking for spots where shoving makes more sense than any other option (e.g. raise-folding, or inducing, or just open-folding). In some spots I might be jamming 18bb with a hand like 66, while in others I might be folding that same hand when I only have 7bb.
Poker is situational. Don't be a robot. Look at your table, think about the situation, and then make the play that has the highest EV. If folding your small stack has a higher EV than jamming, because you expect to ladder up (because other players will go busto sooner) then folding can be better than jamming. If you absolutely need to steal the blinds or double up (because folding it in has no upside), then jamming becomes the play.
