Why is it that sometimes I see two people with two different Ace High hands split the pot but sometimes not? Maybe I’m missing some details. I understand that if the board pairs they both have a pair with Ace high kicker. But then the “second kicker” takes effect no?

I’ve been playing for 3 years mostly online. This is just something I have never fully understood. Anyone got a resource like an article that lists all the split pot scenarios?

You would be shocked and amazed how many times I have seen two guys with AKo play into each other and split the pot with Ace High in the last few weeks of online MTTS I have been grinding. I always LOL @ AKo vs AKo when they both have only Ace High

Because you are playing your best five card hand in a seven card game.

You have to make your hand with the 5 best cards out of 7.

Player 1 has AQ
Player 2 has A2

Board: KKJJ3
they split, both holding KKJJA

Board: AKKQ3
they split, both holding AAKKQ

Board: KJ876
player 1 wins holding AKQJ8 over player 2's AKJ87

Board: A9876
player 1 wins holding AAQ98 over player 2's AA987

It's really not that hard.
This is only for NLHE, there are other rules in Omaha

If you are a newish player, an exercise I like to do is grab a deck of cards, deal myself 2 cards then deal a flop. Identify
1. What is the high hand I currently have
2. What draws do I have
3. What would be the nuts with the flop dealt

The deal out turn and river, repeating the same steps for each street.

Do this over and over until reading a board becomes automatic.

What you likely saw happen was the hole cards in some cases being high enough to act as a kicker, in other cases, they were too low, and the board cards were higher than the players' kickers

Poker can be pretty fast, so learning to read a board and the board texture instinctively is a pretty critical skill
