Is this a split pot or a win? Is this a split pot or a win?

In a Texas holdem game over the weekend, the first 3 cards flopped were a pair of 2’s and a Q. And then a 5 and an 8. I was all in with an A 10. The other guy called with an A and a J. My thought was that the queen was higher than our second high cards so the pot was split. They all said the queen was both of ours and the next card which his jack was the next highest so he won. I just want to hear from people who play all the time about this. Thanks.

Your 5 card hand: 22AQT
Your opponent: 22AQJ

The best 5 card hand wins in NLHE, so your opponent wins the whole pot.

Thanks guys. I thought the queen being on board was higher than our second kicker so it was split. Live and learn.

The queen on board is higher than your second kicker, but the only relevant thing is the best 5 card hand.

So if the board was 22Q8K instead of 22Q85, both of you would play the same hand of 22AKQ and would therefore split the pot.

You always play the best 5-card hand made between your hole cards and the board (7 cards total).

So, you have 22QAT and your opponent has 22QAJ, opponent wins.

If the last card had been a king, then you would both have 22QAK and the pot is split, both of you using the best 5 cards available.

FYP

Board on the turn 22Q5.

Pair the board (Q or 5) and both hands' aces play as the fifth card kicker (22QQA/2255A)

Ace falls and both hands have two pair (AA22) w/ Q kicker

King falls and both hands have 22AKQ

Two falls and both hands have 222AQ
