Hi guys,

I'm new here and at poker as well..

Therefore I'm after a bit of advice, I have started playing online now and really enjoin it but I'm a sh%t at it and despite the fact that I only play micro i.e. 0.05/0.1 I'm loosing a bit. I know basics and I actually played for a bit long time ago (around 2008) and read some guides etc at the time but I think game changed i.e. less loose players etc since then.

Looking thought the forum here there are a lot of different things people recommend for beginners and it is difficult for me to actually start learning in organised manner as I seems to be jumping from one thing to another.

And here is my question, what are a current recommended books for somebody like me? Or maybe websites?

I actually own copy of Ed Miller's "Small Stake Hold'em, Wining Big with Expert Play" but I think it might again be very outdated.

Anything which is rally current and good for starting micro player? Or are books not a good place to start and i should try some online guides and forums (like this one)?

Any recommendations and advice would be much appreciated as I'm getting to the point to just give up...

Welcome to 2+2 and the Beginners Questions area!

What game? are you preparing to play. Limit, Omaha, stud, No Limit...? Cash tables or tournaments *(multitable or single table events? )?

This is still a great place to start if your game is limit holdem (the game I play now after 2 million no-limit HE hands). Not sure why you think this book is outdated...other than its publishing date.

Again, welcome to the forum.

Many thanks for the welcome!

Sorry i totally forgot to mentioned it is NL Cash Holdem.

I would actually prefer Limit but there are no tables at the Poker room I play at the moment :/

Actually the only reason i thought it is outdated was due to some comments on Reddit regarding how the game changed since the publication of this book.

What book would be recommended for a NL beginner?

I can't tell you this myself...but you can easily find many threads about book recommendations from Beginner Questions regulars.

On the front page of BQ you will find a Search tab. Click and typing the simple word "book" yields pages of links to recent threads.......some more relevant than others...but clearly will get you started in the right direction.

My two cents: The SSHE book you have applies only to FIXED-limit hold'em. IMHO the best book hands-down for online NLHE beginners is Blackrain's Crushing the Microstakes.

Also IMHO it is very important as you're reading books and getting advice to discern WHEN the advice works. Some advice is great against bad playes but terrible against good players. Some is great against good players but terrible against bad players. Some advice is better against loose, tight, passive, or aggressive players or tables.

I'll give one more opinion - HAVE FUN. Seriously. Don't get so bogged down in studying and playing and practicing that it becomes a job. Poker is a game. Games are supposed to be fun. Study as long as you enjoy it, play as long as you enjoy it, yada yada. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the recommendation, to be honest I didn't realised SSHE was for fixed games.

I got myself a copy of Crushing the Microstakes and will start with that one.

I do enjoin the game and try not to concentrate on the winnings. however it frustrates me to keep loosing and I would like to at least earn some small amount so i can for example then play some tournaments for fun now and then. If I need to keep paying in i think i will drop out again.

Anyway many thanks again for suggestions and I will probably come back for more when i finish this one!
