WxrLord just dominated me (fnords) in a couple games on there. This is a whole new approach to the game. And, I completely suck right now. I think I am going to work on a game or two at a time, and try and improve.

Does anyone have any advice on what I might read to help bring me up to speed on how to approach these situations?

Hi frob. A good starting point would be Applications of no-limit holdem by Matthew Janda. There are also very good recent books by Michael Acevido and Andrew Brokos (2 books).

Thanks. I was going to get Applications of NL a while ago, but after reading the preview on Amazon, I figured it wouldn't apply to the games I play in (micro limits, and live $1/$2 or home games). In those games, I get away with a very unbalanced strategy. Obviously, I want to grow in my understanding. Like he points out in the cautionary note, the games I play in are not the games the book is typically talking about.

I'll pick up Applications and start with that. After I have a handle on that, maybe I will look at the others. Thanks for the advice.

Started up a few games.

Still fairly new to playing non-recreationally, so I'm only getting introduced to the idea of playing ranges vs. playing individual hands but I think this looks like a really great tool for me to start learning a lot about ranges.

If any of you folks do crush me...be gentle about it!!! haha

Hi

I've played a few games (including against fnords and WxrLord) but I have to admit I still don't quite understand it.

For example:
https://www.rangevsrange.com/game?gameid=7489

I see that the sum of the players' chips at the end is 8. Is that because at the beginning of the game the pot was 8 (3 for the blinds plus 5 for the raise)? If both players play optimally, would each player end up with 4?

Yes, the sum is 8 because that's the sum of the pot before the game starts.

UTG has an advantage in this spot because they have alraedy narrowed their range, whereas BB has to fold a lot. The site-wide average for that spot is about 0.5 chips for the BB and 7.5 for UTG. You can check it out under your statistics .

It's hard to say what the result would be under "optimal play", but it would certainly skew towards UTG's favor. UTG gets a bunch of fold equity right off the bat, and is crushing most flops. In your game, 7 chips worth of EV came directly from preflop folds.

Very cool game, I'm enjoying it a lot. I have an interesting game going on against NotPhilGalfond, anyone here that plays under that sn?

Also is it possible to employ a mixed strategy for some combo's in the competition mode?

I think it's a great tool that helps to think in ranges.

I'm NotPhilGalfond

You can put individual combos into fold/check/bet/call/raise lines, which is technically a "mixed strategy", but you can't use multiple bet sizings on RvR.

Glad you like it. It really helped my game out too!

Oh cool haha, that CO vs SB 3bet game was fun!

Yeah I saw that, but is it correct that I can't check a certain combo some % of the time and bet that same combo the rest of the time?

Unfortunately you can't spit individual combos. KhJc is either doing one action or another, for example.

That CO vs SB 3bet game was good! The flop raise took me offguard, I really had no idea how to handle it lol.

btw, there's a discord server for reviewing games with other ppl on the site - https://discord.gg/EZa59q

This is loads of fun and indeed very useful for learning. OP, have you only posted this in Beginners Questions? I think much more people would enjoy this than the readers of this subforum and the ones who look into "New Posts".

General question: In a spot like where I open HJ and BTN 3bets me, am I correct in assuming that my goal from that point on (realistically) isn't to get to >0 in EV, but rather "lose less" than -3 in EV? And is that how I should read the results the tool shows me in "Results"?

Glad you like it! Where do you think I should post this besides this forum? Maybe under the theory section? Not sure

The sum of each players EV should add up to the initial pot, so your goal should be to have greater than 0 EV. If you fold literally everything on your first move then you will have 0EV (take a look at this timed-out game for an example https://www.rangevsrange.com/game?gameid=7441).

Also, I highly recommend checking out the "statistics page" to get an idea of what the average result is for any particular spot. Some situations are just way harder than others!

Just fired up my first game on a road trip back home vs Wxrlord. Great first game and I’m playing a match vs my dad right now. Fantastic game mode IMO and needs a bigger player base for sure. Gotta get the word out about this.

I just discovered this game and it's really helping me thinking in ranges.
Once you get used to using the software, you can concentrate on building your ranges.

It really requires intensive thinking.
Then, you get to realize how unbalanced you're playing :
you come to a spot with not enough value or not enough bluff combos and get totally unbalanced on the river.

I played 15 games up to now, and plan to keep playing 2 or 3 games every day.

What I'm not clear of yet, is should we use it to learn to play as close as possible as GTO ?

It would have a big potential, then.

Or maybe it's meant to learn how to exploit opponents ?

Anyways, thanks to the designers !

Looked at it for a few minutes - don't get how to actually play - I selected CO vs Button - the range editor I see is for first to act - so CO? Why is there the option to put hands under a Fold category for the CO? Shouldn't it just be Check or Bet?
