For a player that is aspiring to learn to game , what do you think of Poker in terms of money for :

1) Some pocket money

2) Money for a living

I've heard solvers are going to destroy everything , is that true?

Basically, don't get into poker with the intention of making money, get into it because it's a fun game. The effort you need to put in to make a decent wage (for most reasonably affluent countries) is disproportionate.

Dont lend money to play poker, thats bottom line. Also, if you have backers for the game you aint gonna make the most money. But i see a lot of pros got backers for higher stakes

Also, the edge is so small these days the only way you make money is to bink one big tournament and be set for the next years

Pocket money, sure no problem. Professional money, spend the effort somewhere else, there's a very narrow demographic of people who can make decent money playing poker and couldn't or wouldn't make more money doing something else.

it's actually a lot easier to make money as a professional blackjack player.

1) if you practice and study for 1-2 years you can probably make some money

2) if you practice and study full time for 2-3 years you can probably make minimum wage and build further from there, this is INSANELY hard and there are much easier and faster ways to make more money

It's easier to turn $100 into $400 from playing blackjack with perfect strategy than playing a single $109 MTT and trying to turn that into $400 or more.

I was about to post a thread like this one on how to make money in poker and then this thread was posted earlier. 3K_TOM17 you sort of answered my question.

TheDefiniteArticle I'm willing to work hard to get that one big tournament score like 3K_TOM17 is talking about.

Anyone have any advice on how to get that big tournament score? Do you simply play lots of tournaments? Do you take shots? Do you just play $1000 mtts every now and then and study? Do you just play $11 mtts?

Do you win $100,000 from a smaller buy-in mtt and enter a super high roller? Should you avoid backers since you can't earn more money?

How many hours is number 2? You say full time. I have a full time job. So I gotta commit 40 hours to a job a week.

If I'm putting in 40 hours of MTT play on top of that plus 20 hours of study you reckon that's possible to earn some decent coin? min wage you say? how about after 5 years?

Nobody knows about 5 years in the future.

But yes, if you invest 60 hours a week over the next couple of years, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to make some money from poker.

Probably not, because you will burn out in about 2 weeks, maybe a few months if you're though.

I'd advice playing and studying when you have the energy for it, don't push yourself.
If you work full time, play like 5-20 hours / week and study like 1-2 hours, until you're a solid winning player.

A lot of people will tell you to study more than you play.
I don't believe that works for beginning players and even low/mid stakes players.

I would advice studying 1-2 hours for each 5-10 hours you play.
Study something for a bit, then go learn how to apply it while playing.

If you learn fast you could be a winning player doing this after a few months.
If you're a bit slower (which is perfectly fine) it might take you a year or two.

After that you will have enough experience to decide where to go from there.

I once read a general theory that you need to spend 40+ hours on something each week to improve at it beyond average.
You can definitely become a winning player playing/studying just a few hours a week, but if you want to improve past the micro/low stakes, you'll have to spend a ton of time working on your game.

I believe Live poker is more profitable than online. At least for me, but it is boring as hell.

Live play you are literally one tabling so you have to keep focused and there will be times where you go card dead. I spend my time hand reading at the table and usually I'm right or close to what I expect them to have.

Obviously the higher stakes can be more mentally engaging because that's when you start seeing more light 3 bets, more aggression with semi bluffs, floats, 4 bets, squeezes and etc. Higher level of thinking is definitely present at higher stakes.

If brand new to poker though, I wouldn't expect it to be profitable unless you run like a god and learn along the way. Focus on fundamentals and weaknesses and go from there.

1) Great option if you have limited time to play and are good enough at the game. Especially live where the fish are plentiful and they're all set up in a pretty little aquarium for you. Play stakes that are comfortable within your income from your day job and you'll never be too stressed to play 4-5 hour sessions 1-2 times a week.

2) Not a good option for the vast majority of players. First the likelihood of even becoming a winning player given rakes and promos is most likely no better than 5% and probably less. Also, the needed bankroll is really large so that you can ride the variance without needing to dip into additional income to reload a BR.

3* nope. Game's too complicated to fully solve for 100% GTO.

This is purely my opinion. Now that that is out of the way.

1. It is very possible to get some pocket money, but everyone's definition of pocket money is a little different. Let's put a number on it, say roughly $400-$500/month, it is very possible but really depends on how much time you can put into it. I honestly wouldn't think of Poker as just a means of "X number of dollars". If you take it as a "Fun but serious" hobby/side hustle, you can make some spending money.
2. The second you go from "Fun but serious" hobby/side hustle, it becomes a job. It becomes something that you depend on for money to support yourself and pay your bills, ect.,. I've said this a million times, often, when something becomes a "Job", you start to hate it so you look at it a different way. It used to be a Fun thing to do that I took seriously to make some extra cash "on the side", but now I'm forced to sit down for "X number of hours" per day/per week/per month just to pay my bills and eat. I'm not saying that it's impossible, but it's hard as hell.

I would keep it as a Fun but Serious hobby/side hustle before relying on it to make a living. There are so many other things out there to get involved in, why put all your "Eggs in one (poker) basket"? Finish school, find a career you love, Play poker for that pocket money, set a goal with poker (take a nice vacation, X number of $ to go [Insert Destination], or Save up X#$ for [Whatever it is]). Have fun on the tables, and off the tables too.

I have a lot of personal (mostly mental) problems to a point i have an allowance about that , yes i think it's better i find a job

Working part time and playing poker in your spare time might be suitable for yourself. If you can put away $50 a week over the course of two years your going to have $5000+ which will enable you to play 1/2 1/3 live. Stick $100 online and play 5NL for the next few months.

Think a little long term.
