Starting with $5, it's hard not to go bust.

I'm still going with the $2 that PStars gave me a couple of months ago (plus a little assist from SHANOOBIGANS). I'm currently bouncing between $6-$10. Variance is a b*tch with a BR this low, but I will fess-up if I go busto and have to deposit.

Re: Pooh-bah post: A general guide for aspiring online poker players

Raze, thanks a bunch for the direct link to the archieves page of LSD blog.

I literally just sat down and am already 4 or 5 months through it, truly enjoying it!

I'm not computer savy at all... Most of the time, when I bring up the pages, I can't get any of the graphs to load. I've tried refreshing the page a million times on both mozilla and internet explorer. No luck. It's really annoying. Does anyone else have this problem? and/or know about computers and how to fix it?

Thanks

Re: Pooh-bah post: A general guide for aspiring online poker players

Hey man, great post. Just a quick query about the rake examples below.

"I played 40,507 hands of $3/$6 6max limit at Party Poker – my winrate was 2.51 big bets per 100 hands. I paid rake at a rate of 2.19 big bets per 100 hands; therefore, my winrate before rake was 4.7bb/100. As you can see, I paid back almost half my winnings in rake. Seems like a lot, right?

I played 59,375 hands of $5/$10 at the same site. My winrate was 0.24 bb/100 (and the games weren’t all that much harder… isn’t variance great?) I earned $1,450.14 in this stretch, and I paid $11,699.00 in rake. Yes, that’s right. I paid rake at a rate of about 1.94bb/100; therefore my winrate before rake was 2.18bb/100. In this case, as a marginal winner, I was actually paying back 89% of my winnings to the rake!!!"

I'm just starting to research this kind of thing with a view to starting playing online - Am I missing something startling obvious, or is the rake yo pay just a percentage of your winnings? You said earlier that rake is usually between 5% and 10% of each pot won, so how on earth can these examples where you pay 50% rake and then 89% rake make any sense?!?!?

Sorry if I've missed something stupidly obvious!

Was that "wow....brilliant" aimed at the excellent thread, or at the fact that I did miss something stupidly obvious?

So my winrate was actually 0.24bb/100, right? But if I look at my rake paid over that period (1.94bb/100), we can see that the rake is simply enormous in proportion to my winrate. The 89% figure is just the proportion of the rake rate to my winrate.

Now, I play $5/10NL, where the rake is still $3/hand but I can regularly win $500, $1000 or $2000 pots instead of $80 to $100 pots back at $5/10 limit. I can achieve a much higher winrate in proportion to the $3/hand rake, so the rake has less impact on my winrate... probably less than 10%. I still have rakeback, of course....

as per my post in the LC thread, there is a forum upgrade and bumping ensures excellent threads like this are migrated across instead of archiving. well im assuming thats why this was bumped
