Hey guys, I'm just preparing to dive into the world of poker theory having relied solely on ability to mixed success the past 10 years. I've wanted to improve my game for ages but couldn't bring myself to study when playing was an option.

Now that I've been booted from the majority of online poker (banned in Oz reeeee) I'm going to fill the void with poker theory to get my fix. Who knows this might even be good for me.

I'm so green theory-wise I dont even have a solid grasp of hand equities. I figure this is a good place to start so I'm wondering if anyone can help me out with some kind of easily digestible equities chart or similar. I've been experimenting with creating scenarios on card player.com's odds calculator but I'm sure there's a better way.

Also, general advice for delving into theory for theory noobs.

Much appreciated guys.

Variable signals here ... 10 years of mixed success is not 'green' on hand equities. It would be almost impossible IMO to have any online success without basic poker concepts.

I can kind of buy the 'ability' concept in live poker ... not online. You may not be able to lay out the exact math, but you certainly know what's good and why by now.

There is a Poker Theory link under General Poker on this site.

There is plenty on this site to help you get started .. That's probably why you've had almost 100 hits with no comments .. GL

I am just having trouble understanding where the OP is at and what they are asking. Let us know a little bit more about your skill level, and ask a more specific question.

Thanks for the replies. You're right, answer20, I have a basic grasp of hand equities, but I want to nail it down with exact percentages. I'm green on theory like I said. I'm a casual player and I've always relied on intuition...even online. I've won about 60-70k in tourneys over the years on diff accts online, but like I said I know very little accepted theory. I taught myself and never read a single book. I never even bothered to learn drawing odds I just got a feel for it. I think it's a huge hole in my game and I want to improve.

What I'm after is a good reference for hand equities that I can study and memorise.

I want to know my exact odds of hitting draws etc so I can make better decisions.

I figure that's a good place for me to start if I'm going to study the game.

Really appreciate any help guys. Cheers

Here is a good place to start

http://www.cardplayer.com/poker-tools/odds-and-outs

If you google using terms like 'Odds of making a flush', you can find other resources that give you more elaborate scenarios.

The rule of 2 and 4 is useful for estimating the odds of making your hand.

For a better understanding of equity, though, you really need to put in time with an equity calculator to model out how certain hands play against common ranges. Equilab is a commonly used one.

That link is great. Thanks very much!

Once I've grasped this, where would I go to learn how to use my hand equity in conjunction with pot odds to figure out value?

Check out this series called mathenoobics by Diamond Dog. Should cover all your questions on how to use equity to calculate EV
