Okay so I need help. Me and two people were playing. There was a 10 9 8 7 6 on the board, so a straight on the board. I had an 8 and 2 in my hand, friend 1 had a 3 and 4 in their hand, and friend 2 had two Q’s in their hand. So who won? Did I add my 8 in to have a 10 high straight? Did friend 1 win with a 9 high straight? Or did friend 2 win with a pair of Q’s?

Everyone wins with a 10-high straight. If nobody can beat what’s on the board, the pot is chopped between all players who tabled a hand at showdown.

In Texas Hold'em, you make your best 5 card hand with any combination of your hole cards and the community cards (aka the board). If your best 5 card hand is the dame as anyone or everyone else's, then you tie and chop the pot. Suits don't matter, non-playing cards don't matter (every now and again someone will try to argue that they have a better kicker on a board straight, or that their 4 makes 6 card straight with a board of 56789). They are incorrect.

In NL poker, only a Player with Jx or QJ would have a better hand at this Showdown, assuming there were no flushes.

In PLO this is not the case, as Players 'must' use 2 of their 4 hole cards to make their best hand. GL

Probably redundant at this point, but you only play any of 5 cards in hold 'em out of 7, the 2 in your hand and the 5 on the board. Here, each of you is playing the board cards to make a 10-high straight. Your 8 in your hand makes no difference. Assuming no flushes are out there, the only hands that beat the board are if anyone has a Jack or even better, if anyone has Queen-Jack.

Everyone wins, so the money gets split up evenly and everyone essentially gets their own money back and splits up any money from the blinds or other players who put money in and later folded.

Specifically take a look at the guy with the QQ. If he uses his QQ the next best three cards are T98 so he plays a pair of queens with T, 9, 8 kickers. If he uses one Q then he can use Q T 9 8 7, which is just queen high. If he uses neither Q then he gets to use T 9 8 7 6, i.e. a ten high straight. This is the best hand available to him so that's what he does.

You don't get a bonus for using the 8 in your hand instead of the 8 on the board.
