Okay, so I sold some play money and have 00. Okay, so I sold some play money and have 00.

This is going to sound really stupid...but I play a LOT of play money games, and since August I've won and sold off $1800 worth which is currently in my account and I'm deciding what to do with it.

But here's the dumb thing...I feel like I suck at 6-max and Full Ring cash. It's Full Tilt and I think the players are better, but I'm just generally much less comfortable. A couple of the guys I play against, usually heads-up, play 50NL, but when I played 5NL 6-max I only won at about 3.2 bb/100 over 30,000 hands (if that, I went on a downswing before taking a break). As stupid as it sounds I can lose $50 worth of play money in a hand and it doesn't bother me, but if I lose $5 at a micro table it depresses me and I want to stop.

So here's my question...should I play 50NL HU, and just keep selling play money to cover the slight losses while I adjust? Should I keep playing micro cash til I adjust and accept the loss in profitability in the meantime? Or play both? Should I flip it to a different site, like PokerStars which has fishier low limit games? I dunno.

LOL Wtf how many play money points did u have, if u can beat the play money games get into the NL2 see how u go.

You have made $1,800 by selling play money! Wow.

It depends what you want, does it not? You don't mention what your goals are.

If selling play money is profitable for you at a a level you are happy with and you only care about profit, keep doing what you are doing.

If you want to make money long term and increase the amount you are making, which I would imagine is not possible selling play money, then switch to real money.

Only you know the answer.

Bankroll management is something you should definitely follow if you are wanting to build a bankroll without going busto.

Is that for real by the way? Who buys play money?

I'm still amazed that people will pay real money for play chips. I have to find out where to sell these things. I think I have around 2MM from the days when I was first learning the game.

To address your question, if you're looking for less variance, playing HU isn't the way to go.
10-29-2009 , 07:54 AM
How much playmoney did you sell for that 1800?
10-29-2009 , 07:58 AM
is this a level?
10-29-2009 , 08:02 AM
High stakes play money pays more than i thought
10-29-2009 , 08:09 AM
Wait, play money can be exchanged for real money? I'm going straight home to get my old Monopoly set.

Seriously though, people actually pay for play chips? Couldn't you just keep reloading them and selling them bit by bit?
10-29-2009 , 08:13 AM
how many play points gets you 1,800? I had 10mil at one point?
10-29-2009 , 08:14 AM
the minimum amount is about 1 million to be paid 4$ (googled it to see the price)

So 1,800$...

someone please direct me to the 'play money strategy' forum

I dont believe that people who play 50nlHU play play money.

3bb/100 is a winrate, so your not losing money- gratz. If you mean 3ptbb/100 then that is a good winrate if sustained over a longer period of time. Just keep moving up playing 30-50k hands at each level until you either A) dont have a positive winrate B) dont have the bankroll requirements for the next level.

Search bankroll management and follow that and you will be fine. Just start low to begin with, 5nl is fine.

Please be posting how many play chips you sold... Must have been ~600million?

About 300-330 million. It depends on the buyer.

I'd like to make enough money so I can my rent and have some extra meals...so that'd be like $500 a month. But enough to get a better apartment would be sweet too. I only started winning a lot at play money in the last couple months (I broke even for a year because I hated folding). So maybe I can just keep doing that.

Does anybody do coaching? I think I could benefit a lot from someone who wins at small stakes (25NL to 50NL) watching a few of my sessions and telling me what to tweak)

Yeah it's for real. I thought about why people buy them...and I concluded that it's because people like feeling like "big ballers" and high stakes players. Since they can't throw around 100,000 real dollars, they instead will spend a 50 bucks and throw around 10 million play chips at the "high stakes" play money table.

Sounds weird, but it's true. There are ALWAYS people asking to buy.

Yeah. I feel like HU suits me more because I can watch and adjust to people...then again maybe I should try multitabling and just playing very very standard raise-cbet-fold type poker and seeing how I do. I'm confused, too many options.

A couple people do. You can look them up or do a Find Player...they'll be at one type of table one day then at the other the next day. I do the same thing lately.
10-29-2009 , 09:32 AM
OP, I could do with a play money coach, i'll pay $400/hr

play money obv.
10-29-2009 , 10:10 AM
Well if you're uncomfortable, but yet wish to play real money, start out at some 2nl 6max on Stars with 50$ and grind it out.

Else just play playmoney ... sick brag imo !

Btw, how long did it take you to win those 300 mill/1800$ ???

Well it took me a year of breaking even...then in August I guess it came together and I moved to the highest table and went from 160 million to 400 million in about 3 weeks. Then I found a guy who liked donking at the high stakes play money table and who had a lot of extra cash so he ended up buying as much as I was willing to sell at a good price. So I think I sold about $1400 worth in August...and the rest in September. I've been selling off 10m chunks for $50 and occasionally messing around with 25NL and 50NL (break even/slight losing) since then.
10-29-2009 , 10:54 AM
wow..its like a never ending cycle. Once you sell the play money to them you can take it right back at the tables nd sell it to them again! haha

"Cash" games, 1 or 2 tables, the highest ring games on the site (2mil, and Deep which has a 5mil-10mil buy-in), mostly heads-up or 3-handed with random bad players. I learned a lot more playing short-handed, although now I think I could multitable and win much more.

It's weird because there aren't a lot of regular players that high (naturally, few people have that much play money), so you get used to certain people and you play opponent specific...which is kind of funny because they're mostly very bad. Usually when there are bad players (like a real micro cash game), there's so many that you don't get to play short-handed and you don't get to do anything specific.

I improved a lot (learning to use the fold button mainly, getting used to the patterns of bad players and being able to pick off their desperation bluffs when their draws miss and value bet harder) in the last 3 months.

That's why I feel like with a good 25NL or 50NL coach I would need only some small tweaks to be able to win a decent amount there.

It's happened a couple times. BTW, I used to have a huge crush on Vanity when I was little.
