Dumb question here... I see PokerStove is DL only now. What is the best, current day poker odds calculator? Google didn't help much, as it led me to some subpar calculators IMO. I don't mind downloading PS if I have to, but I wasn't sure if the site to download it was 100% legit.

personally I use Equilab whenever I want a basic equity calculator without opening the equity calc function in more specialist software.

I can't think that any STT material is worth the money nowadays given the tiny to zero edge even a good player has over the field at >nanostakes

So the best way is to pay some coaching, because i can see that some people have a good ROI on 9p, 18p and 180p SNG

Well, if you're talking mid sized tournaments that's an entirely different question. Don't talk about 180s as being the same as stt's just because they don't have a fixed start time

Re: ***** Official Dumb Questions Thread ****

The flop comes down and you have a reasonable hand, maybe top pair or two pair, but you worry your opponent is on a flush draw. Should you raise heavy to push him off the pot before he can achieve this? I've noticed a pattern over a few games I've played and I'm wondering if this is the reason.

Post-river and you have nothing, no pairs and maybe 6-high, that's all. How often should you bet as a bluff in order to try and win the pot (thus risking more chips if they call) or should you avoid the risk and just resign yourself to the loss?

Thanks!

1- It is one of the big mistakes that the new players are thinking that when there is 2 suited combos on the flop they immediately assume that the villian has flush draw. Flushes and flush draws are rare in Holdem poker (i assume you know the percentages). Of course take them into your consideration but mostly think about the ranges that the villian can have so you can have the most possible +EV

2- Second question unfortunately depends on various functions like position, the villain, the hero, your stack, tournament or cash vs. so diffucult to answer

Thanks for the answer!

In an unrelated question to to people in general, how much does the timing of your moves matter? There's times when I play online and know that if I get raised then I'm folding, I get raised and I instantly fold. I'm thinking opponents might look at this and think that I either (1) fold to anything regardless of what I have, or (2) that I have a very broad range and I keep playing crap hands.
If I sit and wait a while before folding will that damage my gameplay in the long run? Do players look into the time taken (or not taken) by other players and do they use this information?

Wouldn't really worry about it, if someone is any good they're probably looking at another table in the first place. Don't be that guy that slows the game down for everyone else

Re: ***** Official Dumb Questions Thread ****

I recently fell into No Limit Hold'em and have fun.
I wanted to study more about poker, so I searched for recommended books and lectures.
I purchased Applications of No-Limit Hold em, No-Limit Hold 'em for Advanced Players, Modern poker theory, and Upswing poker lab Lab Core Strategy.

Even though I read the list of terminologies, but it was difficult to understand the contents of these books and lectures.

For example, if it says to defend with 60 percent frequency, I don't know exactly what to do with 60 percent frequency, and I don't know what to do with "defense" here.
I learned about "merged range", "polarized range" and "capped Range", but I don't know what to do and how to apply this.

I had a lot of fun playing poker and I thought I got used to poker because I had mastered the rules, but in fact I realized that I wasn't familiar with the concepts of poker yet and I was completely ignorant.

If anyone has ever been through my situation, can you give me advice on what to do?
Also, It would be nice if you could recommend a basic book that can help me.

Small Stakes No Limit by Ed Miller is a good basic book which is still mostly relevant. Easy Game's another good option.

Modern Poker Theory (the Michael Acevedo book, right?) is incredibly advanced and not the kind of book you get into poker with, Applications is a good transition from hand reading to a more range vs range approach to poker but not one to start with, and NLHEFAP is outdated.

Playing live, can you place chips in / pull out of your pocket between hands? Is it polite? Does anyone care?

Odds Clarification:

I recently read something and want to check up on this.

We are dealt any specific pocket pair 1 out of every 220 hands on average. This means that 220 hands 1 of them will be pocket aces? Or one out of every 221?

The odds of being dealt any pocket pair would be one of every 17 hands? or 1 of every 18?

The odds of flopping a set are 1 out of 7.5 so for every time we see a flop we should expect to flop a set 1 every 7.5 times OR 1 out of every 8.5? Does this include times we flop a full house? Such as TT on T22 board? Is TT on 222 board included? Does this include flopping quads such as TT on TT2 board?

Lastly, today i played 2059 hands. I would be expected to have been dealt pocket pairs 121 times? (2059 / 17 = 121.12)

I saw the flop 68 times. I flopped a set or better 6 times. Expectation would have been 9 times?

A cbet which you want to make happily.

Like you raise pre, someone calls and the flop comes Q22, you should cbet a lot, because the chances are high that your opp missed.

Or you have a note on someone which says "plays only PPs and folds them if no set", cbet half pot and autoprofit (and get out of the way if he calls/raises)

Re: ***** Official Dumb Questions Thread ****

Are freerolls a good gauge of how good you are as a player? I'm thinking that tournaments have a great amount of variance anyways so probably not, then you also have the fact that people just take the piss and go all-in on 72o. Then again, if you were a good player you'd surely get some success irregardless?
