another basic stud question - playabiltiy? another basic stud question - playabiltiy?

hi, hoping people can help.

i am learning stud. articles/books....... lots of great info.

but i don't think there is enough emphasis on the different between stud and flop games like HE and PLO

for simplicity sake, we need to assume limit betting on all 3 games...... no-limit and plo are different animals than limit.

it seems a really key difference is the shared cards on the flop..... by the river, you can determine that no flush, no fullhouse and no straight is possible (obviously not all 3 simultaneously).

i remember gary carson's HE book (awesome book. some big shortcomings too.. hard to reconcile... gary is a great writer) and talking about domination in hold-em...

my sense is he was talking top pair top kicker. it seems unlikely 2 players in stud would have all 4 aces but i haven't thought it through....

likewise, domination by flush, straight, full house seems like much less of a problem in stud..... occasionally, someone may have a better straight by one card in stud, but that is purely coincidence. in a flop game, it is not coincidence at all

i guess my cliff notes question is this: for people who have played alot of stud, how does the game "play" vs. limit HE?....... to me it seems like you are facing alot of very ragged hands. but probability suggests that there is a greater chance of facing a big hand in 7CS

anyway, i'm rambling...... appreciate any color given ........ any good articles out there on flop vs. stud games........ maybe i should search hold-em vs. stud games. i have read quite a bit already but i do find the "shared cards" of HE vs. "all pocket cards of stud isn't mentioned that often

I think the key thing is that you have a much better idea of when your hand is live and when you're completely boned

Gary's HE book was one of the first few I bought back in '01 or '02, think he's passed now

Like most limit games there is more incentive to call, particularly in stud as there's an extra street to play compared to most other variants.
This promotes a truth to the stud saying that it's often a race to two pair

+1 on the bolded.

Assuming stud hi and not stud8, your key decision points are 3rd and 5th street. Generally, if you call a bet on 3rd, folding for one bet on 4th means your call on 3rd was wrong.

On 5th, when the bets double, calling a bet more often than not means unless there is heavy action on 6th, you should see the river.

In addition, opponents can have hidden flushes, straights and boats since on the river, they have 3 hidden cards.

You need to remember more things in Stud than in flop games, like what cards have been folded.

As with any limit game, hero folds for one bet on the river are often wrong due to the size of the pot.

Chip Reese's section on stud on Super/System is a good strating point, but there is a lot of good stuff out there on limit games/mixed games.
