question about bombing the river question about bombing the river

Hi, all. Thanks for fielding my question. It's about late hand betting.

Say it's down to me and another guy. We have bet each turn accordingly, and we get to the river. Say I have about 5K in chips, but the other guy has a massive stack. Like, 75K in chips. On the river, I bet 1K, but he raises his whole stack: 75K in chips. There's no way I can match that with a call.

So, am I forced to fold? Or am I just forced to go all in, and then we show cards, because I have no chips left?

Your bet would be your remaining chips. Your opponent would only be risking that number of chips. In this case, if you call, the dealer will cut out 5k from the other players stack and return the rest of his chips to him.

Your answer depends on the cards you hold lol. If you have a hand you call. If you dont, you fold. But if you call, and win, you'll double up the exact amount you put into the pot.

That is only true if it’s SB vs. BB without antes and rake taken out.

When you're the shorter stack, villain can't "force" you to fold. The maximum amount he can win is whatever is in the pot, plus your remaining stack. The latter is the maximum you can lose.
In online play (and in some live situations), the dealer would push villain's excess chips back into his stack before awarding the pot to the winner.

FWIW, when there is an imbalance in stacksizes, we use the term "effective stack" to describe the smallest stack that's in play, since that will dictate the size of the final pot. If one player has a million chips and the other has one thousand, the effective stack is 1000, and the final pot can't be more than 2000 (unless there were other players that also put money in). Sometimes - in a tournament especially - you'll be forced all in with a short stack and get two callers. In that case, you can "triple up" even though you had less than the other players to start with. Poker would be a really stupid game if a big stack could force everyone to fold by going all in. (I think that cliché is used in at least one bad poker movie. It doesn't happen in real poker games. You're only risking whatever chips you have in front of you).

Thank you, all, for your replies: ArtyMcFly, madlex, MUCKQ, SpewingIsMyMove. This helps a lot. And, it makes a lot of sense that a "villain" wouldn't be allowed to force someone out. Thanks for the help.
