Hi guys, I am relatively new to the online poker. I've played on and off online for about one year. Recently, I've began to take it more seriously and I am desperate to start actually making a profit from this.

2 weeks ago, I put 100 dollars into my account, but that was all gone after around 5 days. I played 10/25 cent cash games which did have some success, but lost as much as I won. I also entered a few tourneys here and there but was only just scrapping the bottom payment.

After this loss, I stopped playing for a few days. And then I topped up the cashier by 50 dollars. And guess what?..yes, I lost that too. My dad, who plays full time online advised to just stick to small buy in tourneys, and so did that and again lost it. When I played, in 3 of these tourneys I only just made the lowest payout.

Please, please can I get some advise because I need to prove to my dad I am capable of making money! Thank you greatly.

get more help from your dad, you basically have a free professional coach who is pretty much available 24/7 to you.

work out a staking/coaching deal with him?

also this belongs in the beginners forum.

Yes I am grateful of the opportunity to get his help. It is just that he has being playing for about 30 years, so he says that him teaching me his strategies aren't good for me to start off using because he wants me to become good using the basics first and to be able to know how to play each hand instantly. I need to build my own bankroll instead of feeding off of his,I feel horrible asking for more dollar. Plus, in scotland, it can be hard to find other players because there arent many! thanks

get some b/r management, watch some video's, set some goals? what is your goals when you deposit 50$, 100$ playing 10/25 is kinda death itself, your dad should know this unless you hit a heater or something.

Pick a format and stick with it.

Tournaments
SNG's
Cash

Start at the lowest stakes possible on your site with no more than 2-3 tables / tournaments open.

Read strategy articles, books and watch videos to get you started.
Don't just jump to a high table with that one move you copied from your father, you will get slaughtered.

Not sure if it's allowed but here's a great source for free starter videos:

Good luck!

Yes, I have been watching loads of videos on youtube, and I have been struggling to find more! my goal is to be able to afford some luxurys and extras. And yes, 10/25 was a crazy jump

@injaxwetrust. I play on pokerstar and I really prefer to play cash because I like to see the real monetary value of my stack on the table. I play NL hold'em cash, but have dabbled in PL omaha. When I was play 10/25 cent NL HE I play 4 tables at once, which might have been excessive I suppose for me. Thanks for the link, I love these kinds of videos! great

I agree with your cash reference, I play Cash as well.

Please realize that blinds come around a lot faster at 6max so you need to get comfortable really fast with the fundamentals of poker if you don't want to lose stack after stack. I personally think it'd be wise if you tried to get a solid TAG (tight agressive) full ring foundation before you start playing 6max.

Good luck!

Ok, I will take that advise on board and fire away into a full ring 0.01/0.02. my bank is 35$ and my goal is to turn this into 60$ in 7 days. is this a realistic approach??

No. You know almost nothing about poker and it is very unlikely you will be making a reasonable profit any time soon. Playing 25nl with $100 - 4 tabling is madness. First stop - search for articles on bankroll management. You need about 20 buyins for any level. Dont presume that because you have 20 BI for a level that you are good enough to play it.

realistic doesnt = good , stop being money results oriented in such short timeframes / hands played

play around a bit with evplusplus.com 's variance calculators depending on how many hands you plan on playing in a week imo

Start from the beginning lowest stake applicable on site and try to get some hands and learn how to play. I think it would be best to learn one game as it's too hard learning multiple games at the same time and focus on improving. Probably if you don't have a hud you could download a free trial and just start putting in volume.

I would say listen to your dad. Prove to him you are a winning player at micros and he'll help you get in the mids.

Most of us here would kill for this opportunity, use it well

Sorry if I was unclear but I was play 0.10/0.25 cash with 100£ not 10/25 stakes. And yes, that is a good point about sticking and specialising in NLhe. and in 30 minutes have made 2 dollars in 0.01/0.02 nl he cash.So for the the foreseeable future I will carry this on. thanks

You are 4 tabling with 4 BI at a stake that you can't beat. This won't work, ever.

Drop down to 2NL, 5NL and start with one or two tables. Play for a couple hours/days then reassess. Whatever you decide to do, the only way you'll be making money anytime soon is a job.

Start at the very bottom and work your way up. Become a 2+2 reg and spend 1-2 hrs per day reading 2+2 threads and living in the micro stakes forum.

Basically, you have to put in real work especially nowadays to be a winning player.

You also need to put some time in with reading books.

You have to be willing to do the work, use the search function, and divorce yourself from the notion that you are special... Acknowledge that you are a fish and have to learn and start from the bottom.

Lastly, you really need to read threads from people who are like you, who are starting from the ground up. The biggest mistakes noobs make is they read about Durrr and Isildur and look at the prop bets of pros turning $100 into $10k in one month and they can't wait to jump into the big games just like them....

No. Read the blogs of micro grinders who are crawling their way to 25NL and 50NL and playing $1 -$5 MTTs and SnGs.

Again, you've got to be willing to do the work. If it were easy then everyone would be winners.

10c/25c is 25nl. X NL where X = 100 x the big blind. so 0.25/0.50 = 50NL etc. for any level you should aim to have around 20x the buyin to play that level and ride out variance (in cash games). if you want to play 25nl, you should be aiming to have $500 ti play there.

In your OP you mentioned that you are "desperate"... that's just not a good place to be in when you're playing.

Study, read, perhaps get yourself some simulation software... from what I'm reading, you're a-ways away from being a consistent winner. That's just reality. Limit your expectations, at least initially.. almost no one starts as an instant winner in 2012.. hang in there & pay your dues.

BTW, Chad, you get the award for creepiest avatar on 2+2... and that's saying something.

1. Start with (min) 50$
2. Play (for example) NL2 cash games
3. Learn how to play from the internet and watch some videos
4. Record a short (30 - 40 min) video so maybe I could give you some advice
