Ive been a cash game pro online for a few years, considering trying out MTTs, and have a few questions:

- What sort of roi is reasonable in 2018 if playing $10-$30 buyin mtts? I understand this is vague and many factors can affect this so im just looking for a rough idea

- What sort of brm should I use? 100 buyins? 300? 500?
Everything ive seen when searching the forums suggests having X amount of buyins, but I haven't seen anything with regard to total daily buyins... is this not really a thing? If not is 300 buyins ok?

My BR is $10k, so following a 300 buyin brm which off the top of my head seems about right, that means I could play upto $33 tournaments. But lets say I have a $20 abi and play 20 tournaments a day, $400 total daily buyins seems extremely high for a $10k BR (in my uneducated opinion). Does that seem high?

I have no idea what a typical ROI for a winning MTT player is these days. Some tourney regs have several losing months in a row before getting a big score that gets them back in profit, so you can't really give an accurate number unless the player has a massive sample size. It greatly depends on your skill edge, the size of the fields, and luck of course.

That said, I think 100 buy-ins is fine if you have the discipline to move down stakes if you have a downswing that affects you mentally, or puts you at risk of ruin (i.e. going busto). Some players prefer to be rolled for 300BI or even 500BI, and it's more of a "comfort factor" thing. i.e. They don't play so well if they only have 50-100 BI, as they become "scared money", so they prefer to be "over-rolled".
If you can have a 50 BI downswing without getting too tilted, and it wouldn't mean you struggle to pay the rent, then you can cope with a 100BI roll.

On any given day, you only need as many buy-ins in your account as you'll need to actually pay to enter the games. You don't have to keep your entire roll in the cashier. Just work out via trial and error what level of comfort you require. If losing $400 in twenty tourneys in one day would upset/tilt you too much, then player lower than $20 tourneys. The 20 BI drops won't happen often, but 20 bricks in a row happens to everyone eventually. With any luck, you'll win 50+ BI by the time it happens to you, so it won't actually cripple you.

I would think a very low risk of ruin (less than 2%) is appropriate for a 10k roll.

You should probably start very small (more $10 tourneys) because it’s probably going to take some time to get your feet wet.

Gl with the coin flips.

Wrong focus. You should be focused on improving and playing your best in all spots.
You might have a high roi winning the sunday storm or sattying into the million and going deep. you might not be able to win a flip in crucial spots leading you to have losing months.

Talking about it isn't getting things done. Start playing.

Yeah if you haven't been playing tourneys at all I would start with $10 and under, and then see how that goes. This will get you back in the tourney mindset and improve your game while probably making you some money as these lower buy in tourneys are a lot softer imo. Then if you are doing well at $10 and under start adding in a few higher buy in tourneys and see how it goes.
