Question: If the first player to act raises to 2bb, what is the smallest 3bet the next player can make?

For example:
SB posts 0.5bb
BB posts 1bb
UTG raises to 2bb
MP raises to x

What is the minimum value of x?

I had an argument with my table at a local tournament the other day. Thanks.

3bb is standard, but I've heard that in some countries it would be 4bb.

Thanks for clarification. I was adamant it's 3bb but they were equally stubborn it's 4bb. So because I have played online waaaaay more than live I thought I better just check. Time to go rub it their faces now.

But plenty of people think it's 4 because they can't even poker

It's pretty common for people to think that it should be twice the current bet. Heck, I've been playing live with the same group of people for over five years and it still comes up now and again

The rule is that the size of the riase must be at least equal to the previous raise. The big blind was raised 1 bb to 2bb. The minimum raise must be 1 bb, so the next raise must be a raise to 3 bb.

This is true on all streets, not just preflop. If player A bets the flop to 100, and player B raises to 300, player C's minimum raise must be to 500.

It's a raise to 3bb, by why would you want to min 3-bet and price the whole world in? Unless the stacks are really weirdly sized, and/or you think it will induce a shove not a call (and you have lolaces) you should always go bigger.

Long story, but I was correcting the tournament director who was also playing at our table (local pub tournament). One of the players min 3bet to 3bb. The TD corrected the player and said the raise must be to 4bb. I corrected the TD and said, no, 3bb is fine. An argument followed and no one agreed with me.

as mentioned above, this rule CAN vary in different places. In France, for example, it would be 4bb due to some weird legal matters. I think some casinos in Czech Republic also enforce this (not all though), so I imagine this can really be casino dependant. In pub league, you usually want to use the most universal rules though, so I would insist on using 2bb->3bb

At least you know they are beyond terrible if nobody knows this.

If the TD says it has to be 4bb because that’s the way he wants it in his tournament, the correct answer to the question is “4bb”.

It’s not like there’s a regulatory body for pub poker tournaments that has a written rule about minimum raise sizes.

True, but I don't think it's something the TD had previously thought about. So it wasn't in his personal rule book or anything like that. He hadn't acknowledged the posting of the big blind as the first bet. The first bet was 2bb in his mind.
