I'm kinda new to playing 6-max. Just recently started playing 6-max SNG's. I kinda have a good idea of what my opening ranges should be. Right now this is what I'm playing...tell me what you think, and any changes I should make.

-10-9s and any higher suited connectors.
-J-9s and higher.
-Q-9s and higher.
-K-9s and higher.
-A-7s and higher.
-5-5 and higher PP.
Am I playing too tight? Too loose? Thoughts please.

Well position matters a ton. I usually open like 11% UTG and open like 37% on the button though I only raise like 30ish% on the button with some limpers in.

Basically for me at this point (though I used to be tighter but I've opened up as I got better) I go something like this (though also the exact players at the table matter - sometimes I don't raise some more of the marginal 3gapper SC's or low KXs hands....and sometimes I replace them with more like just big cards that caa hit top pair........things can depend.....but here:

UTG: 22+,AJo+,ATs+,JTs+, sometimes KQo, more rarely other Axs

MP: 22+,ATo+,A2s+,KTs+,KQo,QTs+, 54s-JTs, 64s-J9s

CO: 22+, AX offsuits can vary but a bunch of times I'll raise a lot of them, A2s+, K2s+, K9o+ (sometimes not K9, sometimes K8's good enough), Q8s+, QTo+, J8s+, JTo, 54s-T9s, 64s-T8s and a good bit of 53s, 74s-96s

Button: 22+,A2s+,A2o+ (sometimes I don't raise some of the AXo's but most of the time), K2s+, KXo (I'll raise a lot of KXo's off here if nobody limped but how low I go depends on the players in the blinds), Q8s+, QTo+, J8s+, JTo, 54s-T9s, 64s-T8s and a good bit of 53s, 74s-96s. And maybe more depending on the players.

the previous two posters have good advice for 6-max cash games, but OP is talking about SNGs right?

But yeah position is still very important, and the playstyle mentioned about is pretty decent for the early stages(maybe ditch some of the weaker suited hands, as they don't play so well with less blinds.

Later on when the blinds are catching up you usually end up playing fold/shove(depending on the structure) where a hand like A6o is a lot better than J10s.

Oh sng's? Never mind. Play real tight early and play a push/fold strategy later on based on ICM.

Da-yum, Lego you count as two people now.

Yeah, just play tight early, then push/fold when/if you get low. If you get a big stack be sure to push everyone around when you're at or near to the bubble.

That is masterful.

bring out an e-book entitled "secrets of sng millionaires", that information alone is more concise and true than most of the stuff you hear about sng's.(no sarcasm intended being serious)

As for 6max sng's imo, pretty much just AA-QQ for first like 3-4 levels(could limp pocket pairs looking for sets if you find that boring)....depending on how many players left/your stack size in relation to those left it literally becomes push or fold. BUT ONLY IF THE BLINDS ARE A SIZEABLE PORTION OF YOURS OR YOUR OPPONENTS STACKS i.e. like if you stack is 10x BB or less it's either push or fold.

I would also like to add that this is a pretty basic stuff and anywhere above $10 sng's you are gonna have to open out and start playing more.
