I've been playing online for a couple years, mostly 20-50$ MTTs. Recently I've been attending some 100$ sit n go tournaments at an underground casino. My tournament play has been fine, but usually when we finish I end up hopping in the 2/4 cash games and I'm having some trouble. Its mostly older guys in their 40s and 50s. The main problem is is figuring out how not to play pots multiway. For ex: last time i went, i got JJ and everyone limped to me on the button, i raised to 40, and got 5 callers??? Luckily flopped the set and won a big pot, but couldnt believe i got that many callers. Few hands later i picked up AA and someone straddled to 6$ and everyone limped again, this time i raised to 60$, and still got 4 callers (one guy said he called with A8 and i showed down against QJ off). Usually i have to leave as the night goes on unless I've run up a big stack as the straddles start getting up to 20$ and I cant afford to play. Anyway, my question is, what is the best way to isolate players in these kinds of games, or at least not play my aces against 5 players?

Playing Aces against 5 players isn't a bad thing....your equity share in the pot becomes lower but you're more than compensated by the extra money in the pot because your equity doesn't drop as fast as the pot grows.

Also move up where they respect your raises.

I will be interested in seeing the responses you get in the Live Low-Stakes NL area of 2+2.... where you posted the identical thread. Try not to make a habit of posting the same question in multiple 2+2 forums.

Do you think it is bad to raise so much and still get a bunch of callers?

The JJ hand result is the quintessential answer maybe......

Do you understand SPR?

Playing multiway pots is a quintessential part of live low stakes poker. If you don't want to do that, there are only two options:

a) don't play in that game
b) raise to an amount that max one other player will call. That might be $100 or $200 or all-in. If 5 people call your 100BB all-ins, bring a book or your ipad and wait for QQ+

Not sure what should be a surprise about this given that the same thing would happen in NOLA or Biloxi just about any day of the week. The only people that should be surprised are those who have little live experience at low stakes...and yes, 2-4 is STILL low.

Cash regs love it when a tournament player/Nit sits down, but you should like the action you are getting as well. It's just not something you see in a tournament since players value their chips a bit more than in a cash game where they can reload.

You are playing with a bunch of 'gamblers' and will have to make the adjustments or just don't sit down. GL

I'm not sure what "underground" game means, but be careful. Does it mean "illegal?"

For example, in some US states home games are illegal when the house takes a rake. I have no idea what the rules might be where you are.
