Hi chaps,

I consider myself to have a decent/competent understanding of limit hold em but was wondering if anyone could recommend any methods to transfer this to no limit.

I would very much appreciate advice on books, articles, sources or anything for that matter that could help me.

Many thanks!

The two games don't really have much in common. The basics go like this:

value bet less in no limit.

bluff at a higher frequency in no limit

check fold more in no limit

pot control more in no limit

chase draws less often in no limit

3 bet preflop less often in no limit

call preflop raises more often in position in no limit

this is all due to the size of the bets, which increases both implied odds with drawing hands and reverse implied odds with bluffcatchers.

When I first started playing on the internet, I played limit because I had such a small bankroll and thought it was the best way to avoid variance.
I was terrified of the dreaded all in!
Since then, I hardly play limit any more when at the casino, not since a couple of years, but I don't regret a thing. The fundamental knowledge i built, through limit, helped my understanding of holde m tremendously. I think everyone who starts out to learn holdem, should start out with limit.
Having said that, limit is only worth your time of you play high stakes.
If you're a limit player, you have a lot of misconceptions about nl holdem.
You can lose even more in limit. You don't have to be afraid to play nl.
I remember once an old timer limit player said jokingly, " if you play no limit, you have to sleep next to an atm"
Well, can't teach no one nothing in a short time so we'll talk again i guess.

I was in the same boat. I used to be a decent winner at 2/4 LHE online before Black Friday. A couple of months ago I got back into poker, but I guess LHE completely dried up within that timeframe, and so I bit the bullet and started to learn NL.

100% would recommend The Grinder's Manual. It's a great book to drill in fundamentals.

Biggest issue I initially had was figuring out when to c-bet and when not to c-bet. In LHE I'm pretty sure I c-bet 100% of flops HU and close to 100% of flops 3-way because, well, hey, it's LHE. Really easy way to burn money in NL though. Working out what boards you have range advantage on and how that corresponds to your betting / checking range is really important IMO.

Past that, @Bob148's pretty much on the money.
