I am not really a beginner. I used to be semi-pro years back and contribute a lot to the site. But besides a few games about a year ago I have been out the game for about 4 years due to getting a real job. Now I have some free time Im looking to get back.
So what have I missed? What are the games like? Are Americans allowed to play nowadays? Any controversy I would have missed in the last few years?

Americans normally play on carbon poker. I think it gets around the law that bans online poker.
The games have probably got a lot more tough since 4 years ago.
